A leading gay-rights group that has praised Tesla\u2019s treatment of its LGBTQ employees wants Elon Musk to apologize for mocking people who display their gender pronouns in their online bios.<\/p>\n

The Human Rights Campaign reportedly weighed in on Musk\u2019s latest controversy after he tried to defend himself from online criticism by invoking the organization\u2019s Corporate Equality Index, an annual ranking that measures how friendly company policies are toward LGBTQ workers.<\/p>\n

The HRC explicitly condemned Musk\u2019s derogatory tweets about pronouns, saying its equality scorecard \u201cis not a cover for poor personal behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMusk should apologize,\u201d David added.<\/p>\n

The dustup started when Tesla\u2019s billionaire CEO posted a bizarre meme on Twitter<\/a> Monday depicting a soldier smearing blood on his face and wearing a hat inscribed with the words, \u201cI love to oppress.\u201d<\/p>\n

The image was captioned, \u201cwhen you put he\/him in your bio\u201d \u2014 an app<\/a>arent slap at people who display their preferred gender pronouns online, a common practice that shows support for people whose gender identities are different from those they were given at birth.<\/p>\n

In response to an article criticizing the meme, Musk pointed out that the Human Rights Campaign has given Tesla several perfect scores on its equality index. \u201cI absolutely support trans, but all these pronouns are an esthetic nightmare,\u201d he tweeted Wednesday, sparking a firestorm of criticism.<\/p>\n

Tesla scored 100 out of 100 on the HRC\u2019s\u00a02020 corporate equality ranking<\/a>\u00a0based on the company\u2019s non-discrimination policies, benefits and practices \u2014 but those criteria alone \u201cdo not represent the entirety of what it takes to ensure a fully inclusive and welcoming environment,\u201d the organization said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMusk\u2019s insensitive comments stand completely contrary to what HRC\u2019s Workplace Equality Program works with companies each day to create \u2014 providing employees a safe, inclusive, and fair work environment,\u201d said the group\u2019s statement, which was\u00a0first reported by CNBC<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Tesla did not immediately respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment Friday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
