{"id":137674,"date":"2020-12-20T02:45:14","date_gmt":"2020-12-19T23:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/faculty-at-nycs-dalton-school-issues-8-page-anti-racism-manifesto\/"},"modified":"2020-12-20T02:45:14","modified_gmt":"2020-12-19T23:45:14","slug":"faculty-at-nycs-dalton-school-issues-8-page-anti-racism-manifesto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/faculty-at-nycs-dalton-school-issues-8-page-anti-racism-manifesto\/","title":{"rendered":"#Faculty at NYC&#8217;s Dalton School issues 8-page anti-racism manifesto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Faculty at NYC&#8217;s Dalton School issues 8-page anti-racism manifesto<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/dalton-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>One of NYC\u2019s poshest private schools is in an uproar over an anti-racist manifesto signed by dozens of faculty members with a sweeping list of demands.<\/p>\n<p>The Dalton School \u2014 which boasts stars Anderson Cooper, Christian Slater and Claire Danes as alumni \u2014 is wrestling with eight pages of \u201cproposals\u201d to overhaul the staffing, curriculum and treatment of black students.<\/p>\n<p>Yearly tuition for grades K-12 at the Upper East Side institution is $54,180 a year.<\/p>\n<p>The proposals \u2014 first reported this week by The Naked Dollar blog \u2014 grew out of the George Floyd police-brutality protests and long-simmering student complaints of racism at the prestigious school.<\/p>\n<p>But some parents say the backlash has become oppressive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy ancestors experienced white supremacy by being slaughtered,\u201d a Jewish parent told The Post.\u00a0 \u201cThe idea that being white automatically means you are privileged or a white supremacist is ridiculous. My child comes from people who had to fight for everything they got.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just about skin color now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those who disagree remain silent, the insider said. \u201cParents are terrified to speak up for fear of retribution. Parents are acting like spineless wimps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Dalton father, who said he\u2019s removed his children from the school as a result of the manifesto, said Dalton \u201chas totally failed in its mission to uplift the very people it professes to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s completely absurd and a total step backwards,\u201d the father, who\u00a0did not want to be identified, told the Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis supposed anti-racist agenda is asking everyone to look at black kids and treat them differently because of the color of their skin,\u201d he said. \u201cThe school is more focused on virtue-signaling this nonsense than it is in actually helping students of color. More parents are going to be pulling their kids out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wide-ranging faculty demands include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hiring 12 full-time diversity officers, and multiple\u00a0 psychologists to support students \u201ccoping with race-based traumatic stress.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Assigning a staffer dedicated to black students who have \u201ccomplaints or face disciplinary action,\u201d and a full-time advocate to help black kids \u201cnavigate a predominantly white institution.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Paying the student debt of black staffers upon hiring them.<\/li>\n<li>Requiring courses that focus on \u201cBlack liberation\u201d and \u201cchallenges to white supremacy.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Compensating any student of color who <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears in Dalton promotional material.<\/li>\n<li>Abolishing high-level academic courses by 2023 if the performance of black students is not on par with non-blacks.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Requiring \u201canti-racism\u201d statements from all staffers.<\/li>\n<li>Overhauling the entire curriculum, reading lists and student plays to reflect diversity and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> justice themes.<\/li>\n<li>Divesting from companies that \u201ccriminalize or dehumanize\u201d black people, including private prisons and tech firms that manufacture police equipment or weapons.<\/li>\n<li>Donating 50 percent of all fundraising dollars to NYC public schools if Dalton is not representative of the city in terms of gender, race, socioeconomic background, and immigration status by 2025.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dalton officials said the document is just \u201ca set of thought-starters created last summer by a group of faculty and staff responding to Dalton\u2019s commitment to becoming an anti-racist institution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDalton\u2019s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism is grounded\u00a0in our deep appreciation for the dignity of all community members, an understanding of differing life backgrounds, empathy for one another, and the ability to engage and listen with respect across differences,\u201d the school said in a statement to The Post.<\/p>\n<p>But Naked Dollar blogger Scott Johnston, who first revealed the manifesto Thursday, said of the demands: \u201cDalton\u2019s teachers are refusing to come back until they are met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dalton spokesman rebutted, \u201cWe\u2019re expecting all teachers to return after winter break.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Johnston \u2014 the author of \u201cCampusland,\u201d a humorous novel about the \u201cwoke\u201d college climate \u2014 said the \u201cmeltdown\u201d at Dalton reflects the angst and self-imposed guilt of elite private schools across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t just Dalton, but one of the most extreme\u00a0examples,\u201d he told The Post.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s a rituatualistic self-abasement these private schools feel they have to subject themselves to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sources told Johnston that Dalton kids were made to watch a PBS video called <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/story\/people-sometimes-think-im-supposed-talk-ghetto-whatever-kids-race\/\">Being 12<\/a>, in which \u201cwhite kids are shamed for the sin of their skin color and told they are complicit in perpetuating racism.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Dalton fourth-grade play featured a role for a \u201cRacist Cop,\u201d Johnston reported, adding that the faculty petition includes a demand that every\u00a0 school play have anti-racist narratives. \u201cI\u2019m told even \u2018To Kill a Mockingbird\u2019 is out these days. It\u2019s a white man trying to save a black man. Can\u2019t have that sort of racial paternalizing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In revealing the turmoil, Johnston wrote,\u00a0\u201cThe rich parents play the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>. They go along with every progressive fad conjured up by the administration and faculty. Many embrace them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Dalton parent who spoke to The Post predicted that 30 to 40 percent of parents of kids in the\u00a0Class of 2025 will pull them out of the school and transfer them as a result of the manifesto.<\/p>\n<p>Making the situation more tense, some Dalton parents are fuming over the school\u2019s resistance to reopening classrooms since the COVID-19 outbreak, remaining fully remote while other private and public schools have resumed some or all in-person instruction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are, in short, frustrated and confused and better hope to understand the school\u2019s thought processes behind the virtual model it has adopted,\u201d a group of parents describing themselves as physicians wrote in a letter to head of school Jim Best, Bloomberg reported in early October.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A petition signed by more than 70 lower-school parents asked for the return of on-campus classes, Bloomberg reported. \u201cZoom-school is not Dalton,\u201d it said. <\/p>\n<p>But that petition was seen by some as racist because faculty of color were more likely to live in the outer boroughs or neighborhoods with high rates of COVID-19.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
