But for professional Santas, the coronavirus has presented major conundrums this holiday season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"gmail-block-6cbfa942-6bbe-42d3-aaf6-d902ba09e58e\">\u201cA few months ago, we had a group of Santas get on a Zoom, just like any other job,\u201d Texas St. Nick Barry Swindall told The Post. \u201cWe shared ideas about what we could still do.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-amazon\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"We Are Santa: Portraits and Profiles\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"618\" height=\"550\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" style=\"max-width:100%\" src=\"https:\/\/read.amazon.com\/kp\/card?preview=inline&amp;linkCode=kpd&amp;ref_=k4w_oembed_jYncbnEKn4cX0W&amp;asin=1616899654&amp;tag=kpembed-20\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"gmail-block-446484ff-efd9-4705-9601-c4b0207de9e1\">Swindall is also one of the subjects in photographer Ron Cooper\u2019s new book, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/We-Are-Santa-Portraits-Profiles\/dp\/1616899654\/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?tag=nypost-20\">\u201cWe Are Santa: Portraits and Profiles.\u201d<\/a> The tome captures some of America\u2019s most creative and devoted professionals.<\/p>\n<p id=\"gmail-block-2ae3e864-3b36-4528-9261-6abcabb95e62\">\u201cSome kids have asked for Santa to take away COVID. But after growing out his own beard eight years ago, he feels he truly \u00adbecame St. Nick.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">\u201cI\u2019ve been doing Santa for 47 years, but I\u2019ve been living with it for eight years. Finally I gave in to the calling,\u201d Swindall told The Post.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">The retired mail carrier, who dons the red suit at a place that offers holiday train rides in Grapevine, Texas, isn\u2019t letting a pandemic stop him from bringing joy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">\u201cWe built a set, and I am kind of in a fish tank with plexiglass walls and a fireplace behind me. The children sit on a bench in front of me. The inspiration was a snow globe,\u201d he said adding that the plexiglass doesn\u2019t show up in pictures.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">He\u2019s also done many virtual visits, and changed up his yearly \u201cselfies with Santa\u201d initiative at the local high school. So did kids, it turns out. When he went out in public, children would inevitably run up and ask if he was Santa \u2014 so he decided to make it official four years ago. <\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re Santa, it\u2019s like having a dog. It takes down people\u2019s inhibitions. Kids hug you and parents don\u2019t balk. People talk to you,\u201d said Cardello, 57.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">He took improv classes to keep up with the unexpected things kids\u00a0can say. \u201cYou need to think on your feet,\u201d he said. \u201cThey really open up to you.\u201d He also had to react quickly to the pandemic. Cardello works festivals (including Tampa\u2019s Gasparilla Pirate Festival \u2014 hence the costume seen here, one of many), and in 2018 was hired by luxury hotels in China. Now he\u2019s doing virtual visits from his home studio. He said kids ask for Baby Yoda and Lol dolls and, yes, for COVID to go away.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">Cardello, who has \u201cmore hair-care products than women,\u201d added that his jolly job\u00a0\u201cis a calling and you can\u2019t do it halfheartedly. A devout Christian who has his master\u2019s degree in religious education, he is now midway through his Ph.D. dissertation. And naturally, the 73-year-old has been to \u201cI can\u2019t tell you how many Santa schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">Since \u00a0being discovered at a mall in 2006 (a worker fell for his beard and pursued Nuckles until he agreed to be the mall\u2019s Santa), the military veteran and Georgia resident has put on the red suit for everything from private parties to auto-shop <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earances.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">But this year he has chosen to turn down gigs because of COVID-19. \u201cSome people don\u2019t care for [wearing] \u00a0a mask,\u201d he lamented. \u201cI have to keep moving in spite of the situation. I have done some virtual visits. He first dressed up at the age of 3, when his great-grandma made him a suit out of a red jogging ensemble and a fake beard from CVS, then went pro in high school. That\u2019s when he learned being St. Nick came with complications.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">\u201cA little girl told me her dad was in Africa and she wanted him to come home for Christmas. What do you say to that?\u201d he told The Post. \u201cI froze, but thankfully her mom stepped in and saved my butt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">Woodson has worked gigs at schools, a local ski resort and private parties. He\u2019s attended six Santa schools, owns nine suits and recently bought a circa-1858 sleigh that he\u2019s going to fix up for photo ops \u2014 hopefully for 2021.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-9e436c24-bdcf-4430-aec7-34cc458a0c0a\">\u201cBut this year, I had to cancel most visits. I did the local parade and some visits on a porch, and we are working on the Internet stuff, too,\u201d Woodson told The Post. But he wasn\u2019t prepared for how the red ensemble would also transform his personality.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-f3ec58ae-b37e-4f40-ae6b-22039c03f4d8\">\u201cI almost felt like I was born to do this,\u201d Bond, 50, told The Post. \u201cIt brought something out in me. I always had a softer side, but my background was in construction and I didn\u2019t always get the opportunity to show it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-6099a012-111a-4ddb-ae25-92f058575861\">Now he spends four months of the year playing\u00a0Santa\u00a0at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.storybookexperiences.com\/\">Storybook Experiences<\/a> photo studio in West Islip, Long Island, which changed its protocols in light of the coronavirus, installing an air filtration system and rebuilding its studios to promote social distancing between\u00a0St. Nick\u00a0and the kids who come to see him. There are deep cleanings between visits, COVID-19 screenings for employees, temperature checks and, of course, masks. Bond wears a \u201cmagic\u201d mask that is clear, so it all but disappears in the picture.<\/p>\n<p id=\"block-78c18a33-5613-4cad-93f8-f1cf30e859f8\">Bond knows\u00a0Santa\u00a0is needed more than ever this year, and he\u2019s savoring every victory. \u201cI had a kid who had leukemia and wasn\u2019t supposed to make it to Christmas. The first year he came out to see me, we prayed and I praised his twin brother for sticking beside him,\u201d said Bond, stifling tears while he recalled his most recent visit from the family. \u201cThis year is four years later, and he is cancer-free.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
