Julian Assange has an unlikely new defender: Sarah Palin, one of his best-known victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am the first one to admit when I make a mistake,\u201d the former Alaska governor said in a two-minute video posted to YouTube<\/a> Saturday.<\/p>\n

Wikileaks, the website Assange ran to disseminate purloined data, posted family photos, private messages, and government emails hacked from Palin\u2019s Yahoo.com account in 2008, weeks after Sen. John McCain named her as his vice-presidential running mate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made a mistake some years ago, not supporting Julian Assange \u2014 thinking that he was a bad guy,\u201d Palin continued in the clip. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve learned a lot since then \u2026 He deserves a pardon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conservative favorite went on to praise Assange for \u201cwhat he has done in the name of real journalism, and that\u2019s getting to the bottom of issues that the public really needs to hear about and benefit from.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a 180-degree turnaround from the Republican stance of 12 years ago, when GOP stalwarts vilified Assange for what they saw as a dirty campaign trick.<\/p>\n

\u201cHacking strikes at the heart of our democracy,\u201d Long Island Rep. Peter King, a top McCain-Palin surrogate, said at the time. \u201cYou can\u2019t go invading someone\u2019s privacy that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But since then \u2014 and particularly after Wikileaks published material that embarrassed Hillary Clinton and the Democrats in 2016 \u2014 some conservatives have developed a strange new respect for Assange, who faces espionage charges for his release of secret American military documents in 2010.<\/p>\n

President Trump, who heaped praise on Assange during his 2016 presidential campaign, is reportedly mulling a pardon.<\/p>\n
