Nerlens Noel, part of the Knicks\u2019 ever-expanding Kentucky connection, started the first two preseason game<\/a>s at center before sitting out the next two with a sore left knee.<\/p>\n

Mitchell Robinson said earlier in camp that he doesn\u2019t mind coming off the bench, but the third-year big man moved into the starting lineup in Noel\u2019s absence the past two games and was particularly \u201cterrific,\u201d according to coach Tom Thibodeau, in Friday\u2019s 36-point rout of the Cavaliers at the Garden.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old Robinson scored eight points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked four shots without committing a personal foul, and the Knicks were a whopping plus-46 in the 27 minutes he was on the floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was terrific. The same thing can be said for him about the way he\u2019s been practicing and working and getting there early and staying late, practicing well, concentrating,\u201d Thibodeau said after the game. \u201cI thought he played as hard as he could.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was on the floor, he was everywhere. He was on the rim, knocking shots away, rebounding the ball, sprinting into screens, putting pressure on the rim. Did a ton of good things. We\u2019ll take a look at the film and keep pushing him to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Dec. 1, Thibodeau said Robinson \u201chas a long way to go,\u201d adding the Knicks were \u201cvery fortunate to have Noel\u201d as a complement and mentor.<\/p>\n

Robinson has come off the bench in 101 of his 127 career games, including only six starts last season.<\/p>\n

Still, the 7-footer set an NBA record in 2019-20 with a .742 field goal percentage, and he\u2019s finished second and seventh in the league in blocked shots in his first two seasons, respectively.<\/p>\n

In addition to hitting three 3-pointers among his game-high 22 points, rookie point guard Immanuel Quickley also showed an ability Friday to get to the free-throw line, sinking five of his team-high seven attempts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did it at Kentucky, I learned that my sophomore year. And it\u2019s really just come down to watching a lot of film,\u201d Quickley said after the game. \u201cWatching guys like Lou Williams, James Harden, the way they can really use the rules of defense against the opponent. And the ref has no choice but to call a foul. I actually practice it a lot. Just continuing to work on all parts of my game. I feel like it\u2019s going to be a big step for me.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
