A New York journalist fell in love with infamous \u201cPharma Bro\u201d Martin Shkreli and upended her \u201cperfect\u201d life for him \u2014 quitting her job and divorcing her husband, she revealed in a new report.<\/p>\n

Former Bloomberg News<\/a> reporter Christie Smythe, 38,\u00a0opened up about her relationship with the convicted fraudster for the first time in\u00a0an Elle magazine article<\/a>\u00a0published Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI fell down the rabbit hole,\u201d Smythe told the mag of her life-altering romance with Shkreli, 37, \u2014 who is serving a seven-year sentence for\u00a0scamming investors\u00a0in hedge funds he operated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happ<\/a>y here. I feel like I have purpose,\u201d she gushed.<\/p>\n

But their love story may not get a happy ending. Smythe hasn\u2019t seen her beau in over a year because of COVID-19 safety protocols at prisons.<\/p>\n

Now working remotely for a journalism start-up from her Harlem basement apartment, Smythe promised to wait for Shkreli.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m gonna try,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Kansas City, Missouri native first crossed paths with Shkreli in 2015, when she learned he was under federal investigation for securities law violations. <\/p>\n

At the time, Smythe was married and had \u201cthe perfect little Brooklyn life,\u201d\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n

She described her increasing involvement with Shkreli over the next few years as \u201cincremental decisions, where you\u2019re, like, slowly boiling yourself to death in the bathtub.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shkreli earned himself the moniker\u00a0of \u201cMost hated man in the world\u201d for\u00a0hiking up the price\u00a0of AIDS drug Daraprim\u00a0nearly 5,000 percent in August 2015 and was convicted of securities fraud in 2017 after a headline-grabbing trial.<\/p>\n

By the time Smythe split from her hubby, she\u2019d been visiting Shkreli in jail for months, even getting a license so she could drive to see him after he was moved to a Pennsylvania prison.<\/p>\n

In the summer of 2018, Smythe quit Bloomberg over her connection to Shkreli. Soon after, \u201cI told Martin I loved him\u201d in a prison visitation room that smelled like chicken wings, she recalled to Elle.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe told me he loved me, too,\u201d Smythe said, and the two kissed.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cIt\u2019s hard to think of a time when I felt happier.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair have discussed their kids\u2019 names and prenups, and Smythe said she even froze her eggs out of fear she\u2019d be too old to have children by the time her \u201clife partner\u201d is freed.<\/p>\n

Her now-ex husband had warned her that Shkreli was \u201cjust using\u201d her and that she was risking her journalistic reputation by \u201cgetting too sucked into this bad person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smythe even admitted that: \u201cMaybe I was being charmed by a master manipulator.\u201d<\/p>\n

Public hatred for Shkreli is well documented. Some 134 prospective jurors were tossed from his trial as they variously described him as\u201d \u201cevil\u201d and said \u201che looks like a d\u2013k,\u201d The Post reported at the time.<\/p>\n

He was also known for going after female journalists who covered the trial, buying urls in the names of two, including a Post reporter, and offering to sell the domains for $12,000.<\/p>\n

The reviled pharma exec even once said that, if acquitted, he would \u201cf\u2013k\u201d a freelance writer who had spurned his advances.<\/p>\n

But smitten Smythe defended his behavior to Elle, saying that \u201cHe trolls because he\u2019s anxious\u2026 He really, really wants to be somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n

In April, Shkreli asked for early release from prison\u00a0because of the coronavirus\u00a0and his lawyers\u00a0revealed he had a fianc\u00e9e, requesting that he serve out the remainder of his sentence at her Manhattan apartment to work on a supposed\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0cure.<\/p>\n

Though she was described as Shkreli\u2019s bride-to-be by his attorneys, Smythe\u00a0said they\u2019re actually \u201clife partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, it looks Smythe speaking out about the love connection may have poured cold water on their romance. <\/p>\n

A statement her beau gave to Elle read: \u201cMr. Shkreli wishes Ms. Smythe the best of luck in her future endeavors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upon hearing his detached words, Smythe \u2014 who has sold the movie rights to a book proposal about Shkreli \u2014 quietly said \u201cThat\u2019s sweet,\u201d the mag reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s him saying, You\u2019re going to live your life and we\u2019re just gonna not be together. That I\u2019m going to maybe get my book and that our paths will\u2026 fork up,\u201d Smythe continued, tearing up.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
