“#NYPD, FDNY app<\/a>ear to let illegal fireworks show play out, video shows<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n At least they weren\u2019t setting them off this time.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn firefighters and cops simply stood around and watched as a massive illegal fireworks show lit up Crown Heights, a fed-up neighborhood resident told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was insane,\u201d said Roxane Steinhauser of the display she caught on video Saturday night, as NYPD and FDNY vehicles rolled up to Empire Boulevard and Kingston Avenue with lights and sirens blaring \u2014 only for the responders to apparently do nothing to stop the pyrotechnics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Steinhauser, 38, was home around 11 p.m. when an \u201cextremely loud\u201d round of fireworks started up, part of what\u2019s become the new normal across the city \u2014 and generated nearly 9,000 complaints to 311 between June 1 and Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt literally felt like it was inside my bedroom,\u201d the real estate agent said. \u201cThe amount of noise it caused, there was no way anyone can sleep through this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Steinhauser headed up to the roof of her building to get a better look, and saw the pyrotechnicians calling the shots down below.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe [saw] a bunch of guys just doing firecrackers in the middle of the street, literally stopping traffic, asking cars to stop,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually, a pair of NYPD squad cars pulled up, followed about five minutes later by \u201cat least seven fire trucks,\u201d Steinhauser said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see police cars show up, like OK, finally, the police is coming to stop them,\u201d she recalled thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n

But instead, the cops just stood by, while the smoke-eaters huddled around the fireworks display, Steinhauser said.<\/p>\n

\u201cA bunch of firefighters came out of their trucks, [and] stood there \u2026 like they were watching them,\u201d she said. \u201c<\/span>They all surrounded them, and they seemed like they told the boys they could do it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey basically came to protect them or surround them, make sure they don\u2019t blow something up,\u201d Steinhauser surmised.<\/span><\/p>\n

The display continued for another 15 to 20 minutes, before the Finest and Bravest both pulled out, Steinhauser said.<\/p>\n

But the fireworks were just getting started.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t stop,\u201d said Steinhauser, estimating that the night only fell silent around 3 a.m. Sunday.<\/p>\n

Asked about the apparent caught-on-video cold shoulder, FDNY spokesman Jim Long said only that the NYPD \u2014 which has enforcement authority \u2014 was on scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

The NYPD did not respond to multiple requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Hours after protesters leaned on their car horns in protest outside Gracie Mansion, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday that the city would crack down with a task force to cut off the pipeline of pyrotechnics coming into the boroughs.<\/p>\n

He balked, however, at the idea of cops busting those lighting the fuses, calling it \u201cnot a good use of police\u2019s time and energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steinhauser said the situation wasn\u2019t helped by some in the neighborhood verbally attacking the cops when they arrived.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sad part is, when the police showed up, there were a bunch of people screaming at them, cursing at them, like they had no right to show up to a firecracker show,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the lack of a crackdown still left her feeling \u201cfear\u201d for what the future holds.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if the police are scared, unfortunately, with everything that\u2019s happening,\u201d she said, in reference to recent unrest. \u201cI don\u2019t know if the police\u2019s hands are tied.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s allowed to have fun, everyone loves firecrackers,\u201d she said. But \u201cIt\u2019s become a zoo. Everyone seems to not be scared [of consequences].\u201d<\/span>\n <\/div>\n
