But that\u2019s not going to stop\u00a0<strong><em>Living<\/em><\/strong>, an English-language remake of Kurosawa\u2019s acclaimed\u00a01952 film<strong>\u00a0<em>Ikiru<\/em><\/strong>. Lionsgate just picked up UK distribution rights to the film, which comes from director<strong>\u00a0Oliver Hermanus<\/strong> and will star <strong>Bill Nighy<\/strong>. Kurosawa\u2019s original followed a civil servant who learns he has cancer and then struggles to leave behind a positive legacy before he dies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=umLtGRl_WE4\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=umLtGRl_WE4<\/a><br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post -->There\u2019s an English-language remake of\u00a0<em>Ikiru<\/em> on the way, and I\u2019m going to go out on a limb and say that everyone is going to think this is a bad idea. But for now, it\u2019s very much h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening, with Deadline confirming Lionsgate just picked up the UK distribution rights to the\u00a0<em>Ikiru<\/em> remake, which is called\u00a0<em>Living<\/em>.\u00a0Bill Nighy is set to star, while\u00a0<strong>Kazuo Ishiguro<\/strong> penned the screenplay which Oliver Hermanus will direct.<\/p>\n<p>The remake is set in London in 1952, and follows \u201cWilliams (Nighy) a veteran civil servant, who has become a cog in the bureaucracy of rebuilding post-WWII England. As paperwork piles up on his desk, Williams learns he has seven months to live. Thus begins his quest to find meaning in his life before it slips away.\u201d In the original,\u00a0Takashi Shimura played Kanji Watanabe, \u201can aging bureaucrat with stomach cancer forced to s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> the veneer off his existence and find meaning in his final days. Told in two parts, Ikiru offers Watanabe\u2019s quest in the present, and then through a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of flashbacks. The result is a multifaceted look at a life through a prism of perspectives, resulting in a full portrait of a man who lacked understanding from others in life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Ikiru<\/em> is widely acclaimed, and while I\u2019m not anti-remake in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>, this just seems like a bad, bad idea. I\u2019m sure people who are unaware of the original will be fine with it, or even indifferent. But those who hold Kurosawa\u2019s film in high regard are bound to grumble, and for good reason \u2013 what\u2019s the point in remaking a film regarded to be a masterpiece? \u201cOver the years I have seen <em>Ikiru<\/em>\u00a0every five years or so, and each time it has moved me, and made me think,\u201d Roger Ebert <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131209120756\/http:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/reviews\/great-movie-ikiru-1952\">wrote<\/a> in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel confident that\u00a0<em>Living<\/em>\u00a0will be in good hands, and we look forward to delivering an inspiring, emotional and rousing cinematic experience,\u201d said <em>Living<\/em> producers Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen. \u201cThe combination of talent both in front of and behind the camera, inspired by Kurosawa\u2019s original screenplay and Ishiguro\u2019s reinterpretation, is both an exhilarating challenge and an exciting prospect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time someone has attempted an\u00a0<em>Ikiru<\/em> remake. Back in 2003, DreamWorks was working on a remake of their own, with plans for Tom Hanks to star. It never got off the ground.
