Irma Vep<\/i> is coming to HBO. The new limited series will star Alicia Vikander, who will also executive produce the drama. The series is an adaptation of the 1996 film from Olivier Assayas and it follows an actress (Vikander), who moves to France to star in a film. What is real and what isn\u2019t begins to blur as she works on the project.<\/p>\n

HBO revealed more about the upcoming series in a press release.<\/p>\n

\u201cHBO has greenlit IRMA VEP<\/i>, a limited series written and directed by Olivier Assayas and starring and executive produced by Alicia Vikander, it was announced today by Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming. Loosely based on Assayas\u2019 1996 feature film of the same name, A24 is producing the limited series along with Kevin Turen and Sam Levinson.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the opportunity arose to partner with Alicia and Olivier we jumped at the chance,\u201d said Orsi. \u201cOlivier is a master at weaving unique narratives imbued with levity and drama and Alicia is one of the most versatile, celebrated actors of our time. They have an undeniable, distinct vision for the reimagining of Olivier\u2019s cult classic film, and we can\u2019t wait to tell it with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been a long-time admirer of Olivier and his work,\u201d said Vikander. \u201cI am very excited for us to work together, and to be a part of the expanded universe of his superb cult classic, \u2018Irma Vep.\u2019 There are a lot of brilliant people coming together and I am delighted to be partnering with HBO and A24 on this special project.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am immensely grateful to Alicia, A24, and HBO for giving me the incredible opportunity to explore and expand Irma Vep in a series format,\u201d said Assayas. \u201cThis is a comedy that will try and catch the zeitgeist the same way the original Irma Vep did, in a very different world, a very different era, that right now feels light years away.\u201d<\/p>\n

IRMA VEP will revolve around \u201cMira\u201d (Vikander) an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who comes to France to star as \u201cIrma Vep\u201d in a remake of the French silent film classic, \u201cLes Vampires.\u201d Set against the backdrop of a lurid crime thriller, Mira struggles as the distinctions between herself and the character she plays begin to blur and merge. IRMA VEP<\/i> reveals to us the uncertain ground that lies at the border of fiction and reality, artifice and authenticity, art and life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A premiere date or additional casting for the drama has not been announced.<\/p>\n
