Ed Sheeran has released fresh music for the first time in more than a year.<\/p>\n

The British singer-songwriter, 29, broke his almost 18-month hiatus on Monday with the release of his melancholy new track \u201cAfterglow.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHey guys. Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you,\u201d Sheeran wrote on his Instagram<\/a> Monday morning. \u201cIt\u2019s not the first single from the next album, it\u2019s just a song I love, and hope you love too. Enjoy ! Have a safe and happ<\/a>y festive break and New Year\u2019s. Back to dad land for me now, ciao x.\u201d<\/p>\n

The post, which featured a clip from the track\u2019s music video, had already racked up more than 1.9 million views as of Monday morning. <\/p>\n

Sheeran last released new music in July 2019 with his fourth album, the star-studded \u201cNo. 6 Collaborations Project,\u201d which featured artists including Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper and Cardi B. <\/p>\n

In August of 2019, Sheeran made a surprise announcement that he\u2019d be taking a break from music following two years of touring. \u201cThere is something very bittersweet about it,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cI love that you guys are here and we are ending it in Ipswich. This is my last gig for probably 18 months.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shortly thereafter, Sheeran announced he\u2019d also be taking a hiatus from social media<\/a>, so he could \u201cactually have something to write about,\u201d he explained last December. He also admitted that he had recently found his life overwhelming, that it had been \u201ca bit nonstop, so I\u2019m just gonna take a breather.\u201d <\/p>\n

He gave fans his word that the break would not be forever. \u201cI\u2019ll be off all social media until it\u2019s time to come back,\u201d he assured his audience. \u201cI promise to be back with some new music when the time is right.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
