Moderna\u2019s coronavirus vaccine began hitting New York arms on Monday.<\/p>\n

One of the first Empire State healthcare workers to get the shot was a nurse in Long Island who survived the virus in March \u2014 and later lost her father to the devastating illness.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel good\u2026 no pain,\u201d said Arlene Ramirez, of Queens, moments after getting pricked live on camera at around 4 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is history,\u201d she added. \u201cThis is hope that everything is going to be OK, and it\u2019s going to be back to \u2014 or better \u2014 than before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ramirez, 44, was the first worker in the Northwell Health system to get the Moderna shot, which was app<\/a>roved late Friday and began rolling out on Sunday. It arrived at the healthcare network\u2019s hospitals earlier Monday.<\/p>\n

It was an emotional moment for the nurse in the emergency department at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream hospital, who recalled seeing \u201cpeople clinging to life, death after death\u201d at the hospital in the early days of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis vaccine is very meaningful to me, it\u2019s very important to me\u2026,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is hope that we will cease this pandemic. That we will live a better life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mom of two watched as her dad battled the virus in the intensive care unit at LIJ, eventually succumbing to the disease.<\/p>\n

Ramirez herself fell \u201cseverely ill\u201d with COVID-19 in March and April, and said the vaccine was a way to decrease her chances of going through the disease again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can not be afraid of obtaining the vaccine,\u201d she said, \u201cWe should be afraid of COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019ll now need to receive a second dose of Moderna\u2019s shot in 28 days.<\/p>\n

The moment came after vaccination efforts officially began last week with the Pfizer-BioNTech shot \u2014 when another Queens nurse became the first in the entire country to receive the COVID-19 inoculation.<\/p>\n

More than 550,000 doses have been administered nationwide since \u2014 with some 38,000 in New York, the most of any state in the US, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands of additional doses will arrive in the Empire State in the coming week \u2014 346,000 from Moderna and 120,000 from Pfizer, Cuomo said.<\/p>\n

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine also requires two shots, administered 21 days apart.<\/p>\n

Healthcare workers in New York received first priority for the shot last week, followed by nursing home residents who began being vaccinated on Monday.<\/p>\n

In the coming week, the priority will be broadened to include other care workers, EMTs, medical examiners, coroners, funeral home workers, Cuomo said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
