The film was a huge hit \u2013 raking in $288 million in total worldwide box office gross \u2013 and continued to solidify Murphy as a genuine movie star. Now, more than 30 years later, Murphy is returning to the role with\u00a0<em>Coming 2 America<\/em>. Here\u2019s the synopsis:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi(Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York \u2013 where it all began.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>An earlier synopsis offered even more insight:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Set after the events of the first film, former Prince Akeem Joffer (Eddie Murphy) is set to become King of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America \u2013 a street savvy Queens native named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler). Honoring his royal father\u2019s (James Earl Jones) dying wish to groom this son as the crown prince, Akeem and Semmi (Arsenio Hall) set off to America once again<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to the returning players,\u00a0<em>Coming 2 America<\/em> also features\u00a0<strong>Wesley Snipes<\/strong>, <strong>Leslie Jones<\/strong>, <strong>Tracy Morgan<\/strong>, <strong>Jermaine Fowler<\/strong>, <strong>Bella Murphy<\/strong>, Rotimi, KiKi Layne, Nomzamo Mbatha, and Teyana Taylor. Official plans for a sequel were first announced back in 2017, although it wasn\u2019t confirmed if Murphy would return. But in 2019, Murphy\u2019s involvement became official.\u00a0<strong>Craig Brewer<\/strong> directs from a screenplay by <strong>Kenya Barris<\/strong>, <strong>Barry W. Blaustein<\/strong>, and <strong>David Sheffield\u00a0<\/strong>(Blaustein and Sheffield wrote the original film, based on an idea from Murphy).<br \/>\n<!-- SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2 -->Will this long-awaited follow-up go over as well as the original? I guess we\u2019ll see, but last year\u2019s wonderful\u00a0<em>Dolemite Is My Name<\/em> confirmed that Murphy\u2019s comedic timing is still pitch-perfect, so I have no doubt\u00a0<em>Coming 2 America<\/em> will garner laughs.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, the plan was to release\u00a0<em>Coming 2 America<\/em> strictly to theaters, but Paramount eventually worked out a deal to premiere the film domestically on Amazon Prime Video (it\u2019ll still open in theaters in certain countries).
