Richard Dormer has gone from wielding a flaming sword on \u201cGame<\/a> of Thrones\u201d to a more lighthearted fantasy world in \u201cThe Watch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Premiering Sunday, Jan. 3, on BBC America (8 p.m.), \u201cThe Watch\u201d has an irreverent tone similar to \u201cThe Hitchhiker\u2019s Guide to the Galaxy.\u201d Set in a city teeming with punk-rock aesthetics that\u2019s\u00a0\u201csomewhere in a distant secondhand dimension\u201d \u2014 as a title card onscreen informs viewers \u2014\u00a0and based on Terry Pratchett\u2019s \u2018Discworld\u2019 novels<\/a>, the series<\/a> follows an unlikely group of misfits who find themselves having to save the city of Ankh-Morpork from a villain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I read the script<\/a>s, I\u2019d never come across anything like it,\u201d Dormer, 51, tells The Post from his home in Belfast.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very zany and irreverent but a real heartfelt piece of comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-starring Matt Berry (\u201cWhat We Do In the Shadows\u201d) as the voice of a sword named Wayne and Sam Adewunmi (\u201cDoctor Who\u201d) as the nefarious Carcer Dun, the show\u2019s humor is sometimes \u201cMonty Python\u201d-esque; title cards share information such as \u201c20 years, 4,698 bottles of booze and 68,237 brain cells later\u201d and characters utter lines like, \u201cYou\u2019re Captain Vimes? But you were trying to urinate on that dog!\u201d<\/p>\n

Dormer\u2019s character, Sam Vimes, is the captain of the city\u2019s police force that\u2019s known as the titular Watch.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of me in Sam,\u201d says Dormer. \u201cI decided in my head that he\u2019s three figures from cinema. He\u2019s Humphrey Bogart in \u2018The African Queen,\u2019 which is where the little necktie comes from. And Lee Marvin in any of his films because he\u2019s that wild-eyed kind of frazzled thing. And then Harrison Ford in the \u2018Star Wars\u2019 movies because he has a bit of swagger as well. On the outside, he looks rough and craggy, but inside he\u2019s a gentle good soul. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think the producers thought of me because I play a lot of tortured souls; troubled men with good hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike Bogart, Marvin or Ford, however, Sam Vimes plays the electric guitar at one point. Dormer even learned the instrument for the role, he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the most joyous thing at my ripe age to suddenly come across the electric guitar,\u201d he said. \u201cAs a teenager, I played the acoustic because everybody else was playing electric. And now I\u2019ve discovered it and it\u2019s transformed my life. Half an hour or one hour a day, I plug in, and I\u2019m on my Stratocaster.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Northern Irish Dormer, who co-starred in the Sky Atlantic series \u201cFortitude\u201d (2015-2018), is best known for playing Beric Dondarrion on \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d \u2014 the eye-patch-wearing, flaming-sword-wielding leader of the Brotherhood without Banners who underwent resurrection long before Jon Snow (Kit Harington) made it fashionable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I have my beard I get stopped [by \u2018GOT\u2019 fans] in a lot of airports, train stations, restaurants,\u201d he says. \u201cBut not so much now because the beard\u2019s come off. It\u2019s nice to be anonymous.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says he thinks \u201cThe Watch\u201d will cheer audiences up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m quite confident that once they get into it, it will lift their spirits,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s very dark times that we\u2019re in. Every day I think of this quote that the show creator Simon Allen said: \u2018In dark and troubled times it\u2019s better to light a candle than curse the darkness.\u2019 And I think that\u2019s what this show does.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about love and hope and it\u2019s redemptive and very funny.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
