Sen. Ted Cruz offered a \u201cweak\u201d rationale for his surprise move to block a bill to grant \u201cpolitical asylum to residents of Hong Kong fleeing China\u2019s increasingly oppressive rule,\u201d notes Ilya Somin at The Volokh Conspiracy<\/a>: a claim that it would make it easier for Beijing to sneak spies into the US \u2014 though asylum app<\/a>licants are expressly vetted for that. Indeed, this principle would have kept out Cruz\u2019s own dad, who fled Castro\u2019s Cuba. Notably, the same claim was \u201cone of the justifications used for barring Jews fleeing Nazi Germany in the 1930s.\u201d Welcoming these people is plainly \u201cthe right thing to do,\u201d yet Cruz and his allies have \u201cforgotten the lessons their ideological forbears learned during the Cold War.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hate watch: Beware Post-COVID Anti-Semitism<\/strong><\/p>\n

At The Jerusalem Post, Doron Kempel and former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly warn that<\/a>, post-COVID, \u201cdeep-rooted anti-Semitism will continue its ascent\u201d and \u201cagain pose a physical peril to the safety and \u00adsecurity of the Jewish population.\u201d Crime, general<\/a>ly, will probably rise amid \u201cworsened economic conditions,\u201d and \u201cclassic anti-Semitism always thrives when \u2018the Jews\u2019 are being blamed for societal problems.\u201d Plus, \u201cwould-be assailants may be emboldened by a decline in police resources,\u201d as the #DefundthePolice cry slashes budgets. Jewish communities should \u201cbe on a heightened state of awareness,\u201d \u201cstrengthen relationships with local police agencies\u201d and \u201cembrace the expertise and technical knowledge\u201d in the private-security field to significantly reduce the possibility\u201d of anti-Semitic attacks.<\/p>\n

Conservative: Don\u2019t Forget Jim Biden\u2019s Sleaze<\/strong><\/p>\n

In all the attention to Hunter Biden\u2019s dealings, \u201cJoe Biden\u2019s brother, James, is too often overlooked in the corruption saga,\u201d notes The Federalist\u2019s Tristan Justice<\/a>. \u201cThe same Chinese businessmen courting the former vice president through Hunter\u201d treated James and his wife to a six-figure shopping spree, and \u201cthe family web of interests interlaced with the Chinese has given rise to new questions regarding Joe Biden\u2019s knowledge and involvement with the family business.\u201d James is now the subject of a federal probe \u201cover a series<\/a> of hospital deals struck under Americore Health,\u201d with the now-bankrupt firm\u2019s CEO accusing Biden of \u201cdiverting funds for the struggling Americore\u201d to help himself. James has long been \u201cleveraging his family name to cultivate trust in his ability to grow the business.\u201d Joe Biden\u2019s involvement is still unknown, but ProPublica reports that he would occasionally meet with James\u2019 potential clients at his brother\u2019s request.<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: The Fall and Fall of California<\/strong><\/p>\n

Does California portend America\u2019s future? Golden State progressives hope so \u2014 yet, Joel Kotkin counters at The American Mind<\/a>, California is \u201closing domestic migrants and, increasingly, losing appeal to immigrants as well.\u201d The toxic mixture of liberal utopianism and \u201cruthless\u201d oligarchy embodied by such icons as the late Apple boss Steve Jobs has yielded massive inequality. \u201cThe coalition that rules the state \u2014 tech oligarchs, public employees and green nonprofits \u2014 have backed a draconian tax and regulatory environment that has reduced construction jobs and allowed manufacturing to stagnate.\u201d Big Tech, meanwhile, doesn\u2019t create that many jobs, and now quality-of-life declines are pushing even those firms to flee. California liberalism, in other words, may well have \u201cpeaked.\u201d<\/p>\n

A year after the outbreak of COVID-19 and 300,000 deaths, Joel Zinberg at City Journal credits<\/a> the market economy and \u201cremarkable scientific innovation\u201d for providing \u201creasons for optimism.\u201d We now seem \u201ccloser to the end of the pandemic than to the beginning, thanks to the innovative power of the market to discover, develop and provide lifesaving products.\u201d It usually takes 10 years to develop vaccines, yet only 10 months after the novel coronavirus was identified, two vaccines are approved. \u201cDeveloping new treatments and diagnostic testing is also normally a years-long process,\u201d but \u201cmultiple\u201d new treatments and tests have been green-lighted. America \u201cendured much in 2020.\u201d But thanks to our dynamic economy and \u201cthe fortitude of our citizens, we can see a path to better days.\u201d <\/p>\n
