“#Whodini\u2019s John \u201cEcstasy\u201d Fletcher Dead at 56<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Whodini founding member John \u201cEcstasy\u201d Fletcher has died at 56, the group\u2019s Grand Master Dee told Variety<\/a><\/em>. Questlove<\/a> had announced the news<\/a> earlier in the day. A cause of death has not been revealed. Alongside bandmates Jalil Hutchins and DJ\/turntablist Grandmaster Dee, Ecstasy was part of the initial wave of hip-hop to emerge from New York City in the early 1980s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Originally signed to Jive Records, Whodini\u2019s self-titled debut album was released in 1982. It featured the Thomas Dolby\u2013produced \u201cMagic\u2019s Wand,\u201d which paid tribute to NYC hip-hop DJ John \u201cMr. Magic\u201d Rivas and was the first hip-hop track ever to receive a music video. Their breakout album was 1984\u2019s Escape<\/em>, now widely regarded as a classic in both \u201980s rap and dance music circles. That album produced multiple beloved songs, including \u201cFive Minutes of Funk\u201d and \u201cThe Freaks Come Out at Night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ecstasy\u2019s fashion signature was a Zorro-style hat, which could often be seen in Whodini photoshoots, videos, and live app<\/a>earances. He and the other members of Whodini were part of the first major hip-hop tour, the Fresh Fest, performing alongside acts such as Run-D.M.C. and Kurtis Blow in 1984. Over the span of their career, the group notched a total of four platinum singles. Their final album Six<\/em> was released in 1996.<\/p>\n

Numerous artists, including Q-Tip<\/a>, Chuck D<\/a>, DJ Premier<\/a>, and Sheila E.<\/a> have paid tribute to Ecstasy. Remembering his friend, LL Cool J wrote<\/a>, \u201cOne of the most important people in this culture to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
