Gal Gadot<\/a> has defended her casting as Cleopatra<\/a> after she was met with\u00a0accusations of \u201cwhitewashing\u201d the upcoming biopic.<\/p>\n

Critics have said that an Arab or African actress should play the role of the iconic Egyptian leader instead of the 35-year-old Israeli actress.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, if you want to be true to the facts, then Cleopatra was Macedonian,\u201d Gadot told\u00a0BBC Arabic.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe were looking for a Macedonian actress that could fit Cleopatra. She wasn\u2019t there. And I was very passionate about Cleopatra.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI have friends from across the globe, whether they\u2019re Muslims or Christian or Catholic or atheist or Buddhist, or Jewish, of course \u2026 People are people. And with me, I want to celebrate the legacy of Cleopatra and honor this amazing historic icon that I admire so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the years, there has been much speculation over Cleopatra\u2019s race.<\/p>\n

In 2008, Egyptologist Sally Ann Ashton from the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge told the Daily Mail<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cShe probably wasn\u2019t just completely European. You\u2019ve got to remember that her family had actually lived in Egypt for 300 years by the time she came to power.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2020, Kathryn Bard, professor of Archaeology and Classical Studies at Boston University,\u00a0told Newsweek<\/a>, \u201cCleopatra VII was white \u2013 of Macedonian descent, as were all of the Ptolemy rulers, who lived in Egypt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cleopatra was famously played by the late Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 Joseph Mankiewicz-directed film, which went on to win four Oscars.<\/p>\n

Gadot\u2019s version of Cleopatra will be directed by her \u201cWonder Woman\u201d collaborator Patty Jenkins.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you might have heard, I teamed up with\u00a0@PattyJenks\u00a0and\u00a0@LKalogridis\u00a0to bring the story of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, to the big screen in a way she\u2019s never been seen before. To tell her story for the first time through women\u2019s eyes, both behind and in front of the camera,\u201d Gadot wrote on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we are especially thrilled to be announcing this on #InternationalDayoftheGirl We hope women and girls all around the world, who aspire to tell stories will never give up on their dreams and will make their voices heard, by and for other women,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Laeta Kalogridis\u00a0will pen the script<\/a> with Paramount Pictures as the studio after making the winning bid in a fight with Warner Bros., Apple\u00a0and Netflix, according to\u00a0Deadline<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n
