Although the funding amounts weren\u2019t revealed, Coinbase said both developers will \u201cbe funded to work on Bitcoin for all of 2021\u201d in amounts payable via BTC or USD. <\/p>\n<p>As Coinbase states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Both candidates demonstrated a consistent history of contributing to Bitcoin Core, and provided the Fund\u2019s advisory board [&#8230;] with a clear, actionable outline of the projects they intend to work on.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Barbosa\u2019s development work was previously funded by crypto mining firm Bitmain before his grants were abruptly <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_jonasschnelli_\/status\/1333704973486600192\">cut<\/a> along with fellow developer Jonas Schnelli. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, I lost my sponsorship.<\/p>\n<p>After more than 3 years, Bitmain decided to halt funding Bitcoin Core developers (also Joao Barbosa\/promag).<\/p>\n<p>Thanks Bitmain for all the help (despite the disagreement we had)!<\/p>\n<p>Help me to continue my work on Bitcoin Core<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5FeGoB76j8\">https:\/\/t.co\/5FeGoB76j8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2764\ufe0f<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jonas Schnelli (@_jonasschnelli_) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_jonasschnelli_\/status\/1333704973486600192?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 1, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Barbosa\u2019s development work is centered on improving the Bitcoin Core user experience on Android and iOS mobile devices. He plans to use the grant money to develop a Bitcoin Core GUI based on the Qt Quick framework. <\/p>\n<p>Coinbase first announced its Crypto Community Fund in October as a way to sponsor codebase development for Bitcoin Core. Depending on the success of the first grants, Coinbase plans to expand the program to other types of crypto projects in the future. <\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin was launched in early 2009 without a fundraise or developer grants. Early developers helped pave the way for new monetary ecosystems to emerge.
