\n The sports teams at two New Jersey high schools in Bergen County will no longer be named the Indians and Cowboys.<\/p>\n

At their two-hour virtual meeting on Monday night, the Pascack Valley Regional High School District Board of Education voted unanimously to remove the nickname of Pascack Hills, the Cowboy, and the mascot of Pascack Valley, the Indian, reported Pascack Hills Trailblazer.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndian mascots are dehumanizing and cause psychological damage to natives,\u201d a former Pascack Valley teacher said during the meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cPersonal feelings of nostalgia do not absolve us from our responsibility to stand up for a marginalized group.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charleen Schwartzman, a Pascack Hills assistant principal said, \u201cThe cowboy is in no way free of bias as it excludes women and people of color.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s choose a mascot that we can all be proud of,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Immedia<\/a>tely after the announcement was made, a counter-petition to keep the Cowboys and Indians names earned more than 700 signatures.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday afternoon a protest erupted in the parking lot at Pascack Hills, where students and community members voiced their opposition of the removal of the Cowboy mascot.<\/p>\n

In a video, protesters confronted the incoming principle and assistant principle over their dismay that \u201cCowboys\u201d will be removed from the athletic field, a man yelled, \u201cWho is going to pay to rip up the endzone?\u201d<\/p>\n

Others shouted, \u201cThis is what the majority looks like!\u201d and \u201cIt makes no sense what you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

A photo was tweeted of group of students \u2014without face masks \u2014 holding signs that read \u201cDefund the BOE\u201d and \u201cTrump Make Hills Great Again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The district plans to assign new names at a later date in a \u201cthoughtful and expeditious manner.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
