Livecoin, a lesser-known Russian cryptocurrency exchange, has abruptly halted operations in the aftermath of an alleged hacker attack on Christmas day. According to Livecoin\u2019s main page<\/a>, the exchange has suffered a \u201ccarefully planned attack\u201d causing the platform to lose control of all of its servers, backend and nodes.<\/p>\n

The exchange urged its customers to stop using its services including deposits, trading and API. \u201cWe were not able to stop our service in time. Our news<\/a> channels were compromised as well. At the moment, we partially control frontend, and so we\u2019re able to place this announcement,” Livecoin\u2019s main page reads.<\/p>\n

Livecoin said that it\u2019s working hard to retrieve control of its servers, promising to provide a security update \u201cin the next few days.\u201d The exchange also claimed that it is cooperating with \u201clocal police authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to some\u00a0reports<\/a>, the incident took place on the night between Dec. 23 and Dec. 24. Hackers have app<\/a>arently managed to take over Livecoin\u2019s infrastructure and modify the prices on the exchange to abnormally high values.<\/p>\n

A co-founder of YellowBlock, a crypto educational website, known as “Cryptorangutang”\u00a0said<\/a> that Bitcoin (BTC) exceeded $320,000 per coin on the platform on Dec. 24. \u201cWhatever is going on, I don\u2019t recommend trying to make $ on this, very likely you will get your funds stuck,\u201d he wrote on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to comments of exchange users on Livecoin\u2019s unofficial Telegram group<\/a>, the exchange is not operating at the time of publishing despite the exchange having briefly opened<\/a> a login page. Some Reddit users also suggested<\/a> that Livecoin’s “hack” could be a classic exit scam.<\/p>\n

Livecoin did not immediately respond to Cointelegraph\u2019s request for comment. The exchange is apparently not actively running any official social media accounts on Twitter or Telegram.<\/p>\n

At the time of publishing, Livecoin\u2019s trading volumes are not available on major crypto tracking websites like CoinGecko<\/a> and CoinMarketCap<\/a>. As of Dec. 24, Livecoin was reportedly ranked<\/a>\u00a0173 among crypto exchanges, with a daily trading volume of around $16 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
