The specialized high school admissions exam is safe from sweeping changes \u2014 at least for now, the state Senate\u2019s Big App<\/a>le education committee boss told The Post this week.<\/p>\n

City Hall announced revamped admissions policies last week that scrapped academic screens for middle school kids next year to address the impact of the coronavirus, especially to low-income kids. <\/p>\n

But state Sen. John Liu (D-Queens) said that Mayor Bill de Blasio will not have the political leverage to rapidly usher in any lasting education policy changes in the final year of his tenure.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis administration will not be in a position to make any longstanding changes without a full public discussion,\u201d he said. \u201cBeyond the one year I don\u2019t\u00a0think there will be wholesale\u00a0policy changes without a public discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liu criticized City Hall for not releasing any information about Gifted and Talented programs during the announcement on middle and high school admissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not surprised,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause none of this administration\u2019s announcements\u00a0have answered all questions pertaining to the subject matter at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liu said he fully expects the roiling debate of screened schools to continue next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cScreened schools have been longstanding\u00a0components of New York City education,\u201d he said. \u201cWhether they are root causes of continuing\u00a0segregation\u00a0is a topic that has to be thoroughly\u00a0discussed. There are many different opinions on that question.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the specialized high school admissions test will remain intact next year, de Blasio called the system \u201cbroken\u201d last week and in need of reform.<\/p>\n

State law dictates the process at the city\u2019s top high schools \u2014 Stuyvesant, Bronx Science<\/a>, and Brooklyn Tech \u2014 and Liu said no changes are in the offing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis law remains intact,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd there are no plans to change it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liu also addressed notable enrollment drops at city schools in the wake of coronavirus turmoil over the past year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do have constituents\u00a0who have departed the city,\u201d he said. \u201cPrimarily because they want their kids in full in-person learning. But I would not say there is a mass exodus. \u00a0
This is the largest school system in the nation and there are bound to be fluctuations. Especially as\u00a0we face an unprecedented crisis. We have some of the best schools in the world. The challenge is to keep it that way.\u201d\n <\/div>\n
