{"id":141755,"date":"2020-12-26T00:49:23","date_gmt":"2020-12-25T21:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/fight-over-covid-19-package-puts-1b-in-ny-rent-aid-at-risk\/"},"modified":"2020-12-26T00:49:23","modified_gmt":"2020-12-25T21:49:23","slug":"fight-over-covid-19-package-puts-1b-in-ny-rent-aid-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/fight-over-covid-19-package-puts-1b-in-ny-rent-aid-at-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"#Fight over COVID-19 package puts $1B in NY rent aid at risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Fight over COVID-19 package puts $1B in NY rent aid at risk<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>More than $1 billion in badly needed rental assistance for New Yorkers is on the line as President Trump and lawmakers in Washington remain at loggerheads over the massive coronavirus aid package Congress passed this week. <\/p>\n<p>The $900 billion economic rescue <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved by lawmakers includes $25 billion in assistance for struggling tenants \u2014 $1.3 billion of which would be bound for the Empire State if Trump inks the deal. <\/p>\n<p>It would be a massive supplement to the state\u2019s beleaguered $100 million program to help residents struggling during the coronavirus pandemic with rent. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers are in dire need of the $1.3 billion in rent relief which would be allocated for New York State in the stimulus package,\u201d said Judith Goldiner, the top lawyer at the Legal Aid Society. \u201cWithout that money New York tenants face a bleak New Year.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Reps for the state\u2019s top federal lawmaker, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, echoed the plea. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator Schumer fought hard to secure this critical $1.3 billion in rent relief\u00a0to New Yorkers and he will not rest until it is delivered,\u201d said spokesman Angelo Roefaro. <\/p>\n<p>Legal Aid estimates that at least 40,000 households in the five boroughs are already at severe risk of eviction if the partial moratorium currently in place ever lifts \u2014 and that hundreds of thousands more New Yorkers are behind on their rent and bills due to the economic havoc caused by the coronavirus pandemic. <\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/housing\/2020\/11\/12\/21561805\/nyc-tenants-take-charge-eviction-moratorium\">A recent survey estimated<\/a> that 1.3 million people statewide could be at risk of eviction, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> non-profit The City revealed in November. But its future is now uncertain after President Trump made a last-minute demand to more than <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>le the $600 stimulus checks to $2,000 \u2014 only to be rebuffed by his fellow Republicans. <\/p>\n<p>The White House did not im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>If the law is eventually signed, New York state officials would score $887 million in federal funds that can be used to help residents anywhere across the state. <\/p>\n<p>The legislation also sets aside an additional $251 million dedicated for residents of the five boroughs, $63 million for Long Island and another $29 million for Westchester, according to figures provided by Schumer\u2019s office. <\/p>\n<p>More than 83,000 New Yorkers applied for help, but the state initially rejected more than 57,000 of the applications because of how strict the eligibility rules are, tenant advocates say. <\/p>\n<p>Applicants must have been making less than 80 percent of the city\u2019s average income before the crisis and they have to prove with paystubs or other paperwork they\u2019ve been financially hurt by COVID-19 economic downturn. <\/p>\n<p>State officials recently nixed a rule that required applicants to also prove that at least 30 percent of their income went to rent before the crisis, too, after Gov. Andrew Cuomo publicly acknowledged the criteria for the program were too restrictive. <\/p>\n<p>Even then, the state program\u2019s small size means it has provided qualified needy city renters with median awards of less than $2,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pandemic has clearly put even more pressure on New Yorkers who were already housing insecure,\u201d said a spokesman for the state\u2019s Housing and Community Renewal division. \u201cBy revising the program\u2019s eligibility criteria and reopening the application window, we can expand access to rent relief while building on Governor Cuomo\u2019s eviction protections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 Additional reporting by Ebony Bowden in Washington D.C. <\/em>\n            <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
