\n On CNN\u2019s \u201cCuomo Prime Time\u201d Tuesday night documentarian Ken Burns, who made his name in 1990 with \u201cThe Civil War,\u201d told the show\u2019s host that, in his informed opinion, Confederate monuments across the country \u201chave to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

This comes on the same day that President Donald Trump said he will issue an executive order threatening up to 10 years in jail for \u201canyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property.\u201d<\/p>\n

I have authorized the Federal Government to arrest anyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property in the U.S. with up to 10 years in prison, per the Veteran\u2019s Memorial Preservation Act, or such other laws that may be pertinent\u2026..<\/p>\n

Trump also boasted about defending the Washington D.C. statue of President Andrew Jackson from a \u201csneak attack\u201d by activists who wanted to tear it down.<\/p>\n

But Burns had a different take, pointing out that \u201cmore than a quarter of the United States presidents owned other human beings,\u201d including Jackson.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re in the middle of an enormous reckoning right now in which the anxieties and the pains and the torments of injustice are bubbling up to the surface,\u201d Burns said. \u201cIt\u2019s very important for people like me, of my complexion, to it be as quiet as possible and to listen. What I know from my reading of history is that the confederate monuments have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rejected the idea that pulling down Civil War monuments was, in effect, erasing the past,<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re an attempt to rewrite history and to essentially celebrate a false narrative about what happ<\/a>ened during the Civil War and to send the wink-winks, the dog whistles, as we\u2019re fond of saying today, across the generations of what the Civil War was about,\u201d Burns explained. \u201cIt\u2019s so interesting we\u2019re having this having this argument because the people that we people who responsible for the deaths of \u2014 yes. These are people responsible for the deaths of the loyal American citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are not about heritage,\u201d said the filmmaker. \u201cThis is about the reimposition of white supremacy in the South at various periods.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burns created a short video for the Washington Post today on the subject.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
