When the father died, Hellerstein wrote in court papers, he told Kaplan he would discuss any problems Kaplan may have \u201cas if I were his father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge, citing his ties to Kaplan, has already recused himself from a different case involving Platinum Partners, but has declined to step away from Rechnitz.<\/p>\n<p>Rechnitz\u2019s lawyers insisted in a Dec. 21 letter to Hellerstein that their client dealt directly with Kaplan to facilitate bribes, and Hellerstein could \u201centertain a bias against Mr. Rechnitz for having involved the court\u2019s \u2018son\u2019 in a bribery scheme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe question is whether this court, based on its close, quasi-familial relationship with Kaplan, could fairly evaluate the arguments Mr. Rechnitz made regarding his culpability and make any impartial determination concerning what the proceeding \u2018turns on.\u2019 There is substantial reason to doubt it could,\u201d they wrote.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
