Dr. Anthony Fauci on Sunday defended raising the bar on his projections about herd immunity for COVID-19 \u2014 insisting that he\u2019s only been offering \u201cestimates\u201d all along.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to realize that we have to be humble and realize what we don\u2019t know. These are pure estimates,\u201d Fauci told CNN anchor Dana Bash on \u201cState of the Union.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Fauci in an interview with the New York Times last week predicted that as many as 90 percent of Americans need to be vaccinated or infected to achieve herd immunity.<\/p>\n

Citing polling about COVID-19 vaccines, Fauci suggested that he went public with the new projections, in part, because the country was finally ready to hear it, according to the paper. <\/p>\n

But asked Sunday why he \u201cwasn\u2019t straight with the American public to begin with,\u201d Fauci denied that he had been sugarcoating his predictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo actually, Dana, I don\u2019t think it can be interpreted as being straight or not,\u201d the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said.<\/p>\n

In the interview Sunday, he said he now predicts that the range is somewhere between 75 and 85 percent of the population.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe calculations that I made 70, 75 percent, it\u2019s a range. The range is going to be somewhere between 70 and 85 percent,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason I started saying 70, 75 percent, I brought it up to 85. That\u2019s not a big leap.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted that he had factored into the new calculation what experts know about the measles, which he believes is more contagious than coronavirus.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you get below 90 percent of the population vaccinated threshold with measles, you start seeing a breakthrough against the herd immunity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I made a calculation that COVID-19 is not nearly as transmissible as measles\u2026 I would imagine that you would need something that you need something less than the 90 percent \u2014 that\u2019s where I got to the 85,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

But when pressed on whether he was \u201cbasing his recommendation on polling and what people could accept,\u201d Fauci acknowledged that it was a \u201cbit of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to encourage the people of the United States and globally to get vaccinated and as many [people] as we possibly get vaccinated, we\u2019ll get closer to herd immunity. The bottom line is it\u2019s a guesstimate. I gave a range,\u201d Fauci said.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
