A woman falsely accused a jazz musician\u2019s 14-year-old son of stealing her cellphone \u2014 lunging at the teen during a wild caught-on-camera incident in the lobby of a Manhattan hotel.<\/p>\n

Footage of the altercation, posted by New York-based trumpeter Keyon Harrold, was shared widely on Sunday, with many saying<\/a> it was yet another example of racial profiling and bogus accusations launched against black people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am furious!!! We see this crap happ<\/a>ening all the time, but it hits different when it hits home!!!,\u201d Harrold, who is black, wrote in the caption<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Harrold said the woman\u2019s phone was returned to her by an Uber driver a few minutes after the incident.<\/p>\n

The video shows the unidentified woman frantically telling a manager at the Arlo Hotel in SoHo that Harrold\u2019s son had her phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake the case off that\u2019s mine. Literally get it back,\u201d she says, attempting to have the manager intervene.<\/p>\n

The teen insists that he\u2019s holding his own phone, as Harrold incredulously asks the woman \u201cYou think there\u2019s only one iPhone made in the world?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cMy son has nothing to do with her,\u201d the dad adds to the manager.<\/p>\n

But the unhinged woman continues to say that \u201che has my phone\u201d \u2014 before telling the dad and son she won\u2019t let them leave the hotel and lunging at them.<\/p>\n

At one point, Harrold can be heard asking the woman if she accused them simply because of their race.<\/p>\n

The musician, who has worked with the likes of Jay-Z and Beyonc\u00e9, said he and his son were on their way to breakfast on Saturday when the woman \u201cassaulted\u201d them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis person quote on quote \u2018lost\u2019 her iPhone, and apparently, my son magically acquired it, which (is) merely ridiculous,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

While his video is about a minute long, Harrold, 40, says the encounter lasted about five, during which the woman scratched him and tackled his son.<\/p>\n

He also blasted the manager for \u201cadvocating\u201d for the woman, who he said was no longer a guest of the boutique hotel, while he and his son were still staying there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWatch as the manager advocates for the lady who is not even a hotel guest, insisting and attempting to use his managerial authority to force my son to show his phone to this random lady,\u201d Harrold wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe actually empowered her!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t apologize for the \u201ctraumatic\u201d situation for his son, or to him, and neither did anyone at the hotel, Harrold said.<\/p>\n

An Arlo spokesman did later apologize to Harrold and his son in a statement and said that while the manager called the cops and hotel security stepped in, \u201cmore could have been done to de-escalate the dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re deeply disheartened about the recent incident of baseless accusation, prejudice and assault against an innocent guest of Arlo hotel,\u201d\u00a0the statement said.<\/p>\n

Police confirmed they were called to the hotel on Saturday afternoon for a report of harassment, saying the woman had grabbed and shoved the dad and son after accusing them of taking a cellphone she had misplaced.<\/p>\n

The encounter drew comparisons to notorious Central Park \u2018Karen\u2019 Amy Cooper \u2014 who touched off a firestorm in May when\u00a0she called the cops on a black birdwatcher\u00a0who asked her to keep her dog on a leash.<\/p>\n

Speaking to The New York Times<\/a> on Sunday, Harrold said he was left \u201cshell-shocked\u201d by the incident and that he believed his son, Keyon Harrold Jr., was racially-profiled by the woman.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wonder what would happen if it were different, if it were a black woman and there was a white 14-year-old,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said he worried about what would have happened if he hadn\u2019t been there to protect his son, noting \u201cI\u2019ve seen people be hurt or even killed for less.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a follow-up post on Instagram, Harrold \u2014 who appeared on the Grammy-winning soundtrack for the 2016 Miles Davis biopic<\/a> \u201cMiles Ahead\u201d \u2014 thanked fans for their support but warned Internet sleuths not to falsely accuse others of being the woman in the video.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s be mindful and spread love through this hatefulness,\u201d he wrote.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
