\n A Michigan mayor has resigned amid criticism for saying she\u2019d be \u201ccrucified\u201d if she didn\u2019t vote to reapp<\/a>oint a black city official.<\/p>\n

Beth Bashert stepped down as mayor of Ypsilanti Tuesday, one week after making the controversial comment during a City Council vote on the reappointment of city human relations commissioner Ka\u2019Ron Gaines.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am deeply sorry to have my service end on this note and in this way,\u201d Bashert, who is white, wrote on Facebook<\/a>. \u201cSadly, as a result of my actions, there is healing to do to ensure that all residents, including black, indigenous and people of color, enjoy full equity in Ypsilanti.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bashert \u2014 who ultimately voted to reappoint Gaines, while the rest of the panel voted against the move \u2014 apologized for her \u201cbiased\u201d remark a day later.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince I will be crucified if I vote against any black person on any commission, I\u2019m going to vote yes,\u201d Bashert said during the Zoom meeting.<\/p>\n

But Bashert\u2019s apology wasn\u2019t enough to satisfy a nonprofit group in Ypsilanti, Survivors Speak, and other council members who joined the call for her resignation during protests Saturday and Monday, MLive.com reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am glad that she recognized that the role was not about her but about the community,\u201d Councilwoman Nicole Brown told the outlet. \u201cShe did the right thing to start healing and moving our community forward. I\u2019m thankful that she made the decision to resign.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another council member, meanwhile, said Bashert\u2019s resignation more than two years before her term was set to expire is a sign of society\u2019s changing views on \u201clanguage, microaggressions and actions\u201d regarding systemic racism.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever policy, positions and personnel have much long-standing as a form of structural racism,\u201d Councilman Anthony Morgan told MLive.com. \u201cThose are the things that need to be deconstructed.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
