In October of this year, word broke that\u00a0Creed<\/em> <\/strong>franchise star Michael B. Jordan<\/strong> might end up directing\u00a0Creed III<\/em><\/strong>. Now, Jordan\u2019s Creed\u00a0<\/em>co-star Tessa Thompson<\/strong> has confirmed just that, revealing in an interview that Jordan is indeed set to direct the eventual sequel. This would mark Jordan\u2019s directorial debut, and would also follow precedent since\u00a0Rocky<\/em> star Sylvester Stallone<\/strong>\u00a0went on to direct several\u00a0Rocky<\/em> sequels.<\/p>\n

In his book\u00a0A Life in Movies<\/a>: Stories From 50 Years in Hollywood<\/em>,\u00a0Rocky<\/em> and\u00a0Creed<\/em> producer\u00a0Irwin Winkler\u00a0<\/strong>revealed that star Michael B. Jordan could be stepping behind the camera for another\u00a0Creed<\/em> film. \u201cI promised Michael B. Jordan that he\u2019d get his chance to direct Creed III<\/em>,\u201d Winkler wrote\u00a0in an excerpt that surfaced in October 2020. \u201cLast year in a conversation with our Creed<\/em> star Michael B. Jordan, I offered him the opportunity to not only star in, but also to direct Creed III<\/em>.\u201d
\nNow, as 2020 comes to a close, we have confirmation on that from another source close to the production: Tessa Thompson. In a video interview<\/a> promoting her latest film\u00a0Sylvie\u2019s Love<\/em>, Thompson was asked if Jordan would be helming\u00a0Creed III<\/em>, to which she replied yes while poking good-natured fun at Jordan\u2019s recent coronation as People\u2019s Sexiest Man Alive 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And unless Jordan has a top-secret directorial project he\u2019s going to helm first, that would make\u00a0Creed III<\/em> his directorial debut. And in some ways, he\u2019s following tradition.\u00a0Creed<\/em> is a spin-off of the\u00a0Rocky<\/em> franchise, and\u00a0Rocky<\/em> and\u00a0Creed<\/em> star Sylvester Stallone ended up directing several\u00a0Rocky<\/em> sequels \u2013\u00a0Rocky II<\/em>,\u00a0Rocky III<\/em>,\u00a0Rocky IV<\/em>, and\u00a0Rocky Balboa<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Beyond Jordan becoming director and returning as star, we don\u2019t know a whole lot about\u00a0Creed III<\/em>. At one point, Stallone said he wanted to bring in the son of\u00a0Clubber Lang, the villain from\u00a0Rocky III<\/em> played by Mr. T, for Jordan\u2019s Adonis Creed to fight. There were also reports that the\u00a0Rocky<\/em> franchise might start back up again separate from\u00a0Creed<\/em>, with Stallone\u2019s Rocky mentoring another young fighter. But we haven\u2019t heard much about that since 2019.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll let the professionals handle this, but in my humble opinion, I\u00a0really<\/em> hope\u00a0Creed III<\/em> doesn\u2019t use the \u201cson of Clubber Lang\u201d idea.\u00a0Creed II<\/em> already brought in the son of\u00a0Rocky IV<\/em>\u2018s Ivan Drago, and to have Jordan\u2019s\u00a0Adonis Creed keep fighting the sons of Rocky\u2019s former opponents is a tired, boring idea. The first\u00a0Creed<\/em>, directed by Ryan Coogler, was fantastic \u2013 a great continuation of the\u00a0Rocky<\/em> series that also forged its own identity.<\/p>\n

Creed II<\/em>, helmed by\u00a0 Steven Caple Jr., was a bit of a step down. While Jordan remained a compelling lead, and the relationship between Adonis and Rocky remained interesting,\u00a0Creed II<\/em> felt too much like a\u00a0Rocky<\/em> sequel and not its own thing. My only hope for\u00a0Creed III<\/em> is that it gets back to embracing its own identity instead of remaining so beholden to the\u00a0Rocky<\/em> series.
