It\u2019s time to boogie away 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fox\u2019s hit reality series<\/a> \u201cThe Masked Singer\u201d has a new spinoff: \u201cThe Masked Dancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series premiered Sunday and will see its regular winter time slot premiere with its second episode on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 8 p.m. The rowdy reality competition, hosted by Craig Robinson, has the same basic format as its sister show.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Celebs disguise their identities with elaborate costumes to perform in front of a panel of judges, including Ken Jeong, Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green and Ashley Tisdale. <\/p>\n

This time, though, it\u2019ll be shimmying rather than singing.<\/p>\n

Over the course of several episodes, contestants are unmasked after offering clues about their identities until there\u2019s one left standing \u2014 the star who has duped the judges, wins.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of differences between the two [shows] and a lot of shared DNA,\u201d Craig Plestis, who executive produces both \u201cSinger\u201d and \u201cDancer,\u201d told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Spoiler alert:<\/strong> The first celebrity dancer to be unmasked \u2014 and sent packing \u2014 is revealed later in this story.<\/em><\/p>\n

Just like on \u201cThe Masked Singer\u201d \u2014 which has been airing since January of 2019, averaging upwards of 11 million viewers per episode \u2014 contestants are named by their costumes. For instance, T-Pain won Season 1 of \u201cSinger\u201d wearing a one-eyed fuzzy creature costume, and he was known simply as \u201cMonster\u201d until his dramatic unmasking in the finale.<\/p>\n

On \u201cThe Masked Dancer,\u201d viewers will meet Exotic Bird, Tulip, Hammerhead, Cotton Candy and more, adding up to a total of 10 celebrities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

One of the key differences is that since contestants dance instead of using their pipes, viewers have less of an opportunity to use their voice as a clue. You\u2019ll have to ID them just by their moves \u2014 but the show has added some new Easter eggs to help. <\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you don\u2019t get to hear the contestants sing, we added some neat ways to do clues within the show,\u201d said Plestis, adding that there is a new segment called \u201cWord Up.\u201d On \u201cSinger\u201d, although the audience is privy to contestants\u2019 singing voices, their speaking voices are distorted. On \u201cDancer\u201d, they won\u2019t be. <\/p>\n

\u201d \u2018Word Up\u2019 is where you hear a contestant on the \u2018Masked\u2019 stage actually speak in their real voice for the first time,\u201d said Plestis. \u201cThat was a scary element that we added in the show, because we were worried, \u2018Are we giving away too much?\u2019 But it turned out to be a wonderful, fun element. It got some people closer and some people to go in another direction [with their guesses].\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Masked Dancer\u201d was also a 2019 segment on \u201cEllen\u201d as a spoof of \u201cThe Masked Singer\u201d (and Ellen DeGeneres is now among the show\u2019s producers). However, Plestis said that the idea for the spinoff show did not come directly from \u201cEllen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked about it a little bit before the \u2018Ellen\u2019 show. But when Ellen did it, it was proof of concept,\u201d he said. \u201cThat it was enjoyable to watch, and that you could figure out who was underneath the mask.\u201d<\/p>\n

And though it\u2019ll look like there\u2019s a full live audience watching the proceedings, the show was filmed in October, well into the coronavirus pandemic. So, the audience effect was achieved through \u201ca mix of TV magic\u201d: a combination of footage from previous seasons and peppered-in images of some of the show\u2019s super fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really put a lot of effort to make that viewing experience be just enjoyable so that you could forget about the world,\u201d Plestis said. <\/p>\n

\u201cSinger\u201d boasted celeb guests including Kelly Osbourne, Bob Saget and Bella Thorne. Even Sarah Palin has donned a pink bear costume on-screen. Osbourne had singing chops, while \u201cDancer\u201d judge Brian Austin Green \u2014 who app<\/a>eared on the fourth season of \u201cSinger\u201d \u2014 was a crummy crooner but made up for it with attitude<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Though there will be no spoilers about who the stars are, Plestis teased that some of the famous contestants are known for their dancing, while others are not. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe always like to have a mix of people who know a craft\u2026 and some people that you didn\u2019t expect to know how to dance,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

For instance, Sunday\u2019s episode already unmasked the first celeb contestant \u2014 the Disco Ball, dressed as a giant disco ball \u2014 as Ice-T. The rapper and \u201cLaw & Order: SVU\u201d star, 62, gave the clue that he is not \u201cexpendable yet,\u201d which turned out to be a reference to his 1995 film \u201cJohnny Mnemonic\u201d co-starring \u201cThe Expendables\u201d star Dolph Lundgren. The panel of judges all shouted at the revelation, and Brian Austin Green said, \u201coriginal gangster!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the beauty of this game<\/a>. You\u2019re wowed by them and you\u2019re like, \u2018Oh my gosh, who can that be?\u2019\u201d said Plestis. \u201cThat level of discovery is one of the things that makes \u2018The Masked Dancer\u2019 so joyful to watch.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
