At RealClearPolitics, retired editor Frank Miele<\/a> \u2014 who used to help choose AP\u2019s top 10 stories of the year \u2014 is so fed up with journalism that he is offering his first annual \u201cLast Chance to Wake Up and Smell the News<\/a> They Tried to Kill\u201d list. Among 2020\u2019s top-contender stories: \u201cMutating lockdowns\u201d that let some stores stay open but not others. \u201cTrump\u2019s vaccine victory,\u201d which \u201cled to the fastest turnaround ever\u201d for such a medication. Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop, first reported by The Post but buried by many others in \u201cone of the greatest victories in the history of propaganda.\u201d Gov. \u00adCuomo\u2019s orders that led to thousands of nursing-home deaths. George Soros\u2019 successful campaign \u201cto subvert American jurisprudence by electing pro-criminal\u201d DAs. And of course: \u201cthe suppression of news itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: The Real Authoritarian Threat<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAsserting that Donald Trump is a fascist-like dictator threatening the previously sturdy foundations of US democracy has been a virtual \u00adrequirement over the last four years,\u201d Glenn Greenwald observes at his blog<\/a>. \u201cYet it has proven to be a preposterous farce,\u201d since the bombastic developer repeatedly passed up opportunities to act like a tyrant. The real authoritarian forces in US life, rather, are \u201ccorporate behemoths close to unchallengeable in terms of both economic and political power\u201d owing to a combination of lockdowns, corporate welfare and our growing dependence on online activities. Worse, \u201cthe primary beneficiaries of these rapid changes are Silicon Valley giants, at least three of which \u2014 Facebook, Google and Amazon \u2014 are now classic monopolies\u201d that not only dominate markets but can shape how and what we get to read and think.<\/p>\n

From the right: The China Connection<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hunter Biden and House Intelligence Committee Democrat Eric Swalwell have much in common, including \u201ctheir dealings with China\u201d and a press \u201cuninterested in getting to the bottom of their stories,\u201d snarks The Wall Street Journal\u2019s William McGurn<\/a>. \u201cTheir cases are only a microcosm of what Secretary of State Mike Pompeo\u201d calls \u201can all-out Chinese Communist Party effort \u2018to make Americans receptive to Beijing\u2019s form of \u00adauthoritarianism.\u2019\u200a\u201d Don\u2019t be fooled by China\u2019s duplicitous ways, including \u201cfriendship\u201d associations: The regime will \u201cuse whatever tools it has to mute opposition to China.\u201d Businesses kowtow, too: China was angry about the Dalai Lama biopic \u201cKundun,\u201d and when Robert Iger became Disney CEO, \u201che made a priority of getting back in China\u2019s good graces.\u201d Now Iger \u201cis being floated as Joe Biden\u2019s ambassador to Beijing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Russia\u2019s Rogue Regime<\/strong><\/p>\n

America can no longer afford to ignore Russia\u2019s \u201cgrowing list of egregious crimes,\u201d argues Garry Kasparov at CNN<\/a>. Its \u201cassassinations of political targets at home and abroad,\u201d invasion of Ukraine and hacking of US targets make clear that Vladimir Putin \u201chas become bolder and more dangerous than ever.\u201d The exiled Kasparov doesn\u2019t \u201cdrink tea with strangers\u201d or \u201cfly with the state-owned airline Aeroflot,\u201d but \u201cno one is untouchable in a world where criminals go unpunished.\u201d World leaders have yet to hold the Kremlin responsible for any of its misdeeds, including the attempted murder of dissident Alexey Navalny. \u201cPutin\u2019s henchmen are sloppy, because they can afford to be. Just like their boss, they don\u2019t fear any repercussions.\u201d But it\u2019s long \u201cpast time to treat Putin\u2019s Russia like the rogue regime it has become.\u201d<\/p>\n

Space beat: Beijing\u2019s Big Plans<\/strong><\/p>\n

President-elect Joe Biden\u2019s NASA transition team wants to \u201cstart what could be the biggest transfer of technology<\/a> to China,\u201d which \u201ccould result in the Chinese military dominating space and, with it, world affairs,\u201d warns Gordon G. Chang at The Hill<\/a>. China\u2019s space program \u201cis military at its core.\u201d Beijing reportedly plans to \u201ccolonize the Moon,\u201d with \u201cno intention of allowing others\u201d to do so, making it all too easy \u201cto dominate the new \u2018interstates\u2019 to the heavens.\u201d Attempts to partner with China are \u201cdeeply misguided,\u201d and the \u201cstakes are high.\u201d Team Biden must understand \u201ccooperation does not necessarily lead to a better relationship with militant regimes.\u201d <\/p>\n
