King\u2019s Hawaiian sweet rolls are not Hawaiian enough, a new lawsuit charges. <\/p>\n

The class-action suit, filed Friday in Manhattan federal court, accuses the maker of the popular baked products of defrauding consumers by suggesting they\u2019re still made in the Aloha State.<\/p>\n

In fact, they\u2019re made in California.<\/p>\n

\u201cKing\u2019s Hawaiian has been known as the most authentic purveyor of its eponymous Hawaiian rolls,\u201d Long Island attorney Spencer Sheehan, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of a Yonkers man and others, told The Post on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, they\u2019re labeling gives consumers the impression that it\u2019s made in Hawaii,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawsuit, which names Yonkers resident Robert Galinsky as the chief plaintiff, concedes that King\u2019s Hawaiian \u201cessentially invented this category of food,\u201d and said others companies have tried to emulate the rolls and their branding.<\/p>\n

At least a dozen other food companies \u2014 from Pillsbury to Sara Lee \u2014 have packaged and marketed products dubbed \u201cHawaiian sweet rolls,\u201d the suit said.<\/p>\n

The objection, the lawsuit said, is the front label mention of \u201cHilo, Hawaii,\u201d where the rolls were first made in the 1950s. <\/p>\n

However, they\u2019re now made in Torrance, California \u2014 and the suggestion of continued Hawaiian authenticity means consumers must pay a higher price for the buns, the suit charges. <\/p>\n

\u201cDefendant\u2019s prominent placement of \u2018Hilo, Hawaii,\u2019 on the front label \u2014 copuled with the other legitimate uses of the word \u2018Hawaiian\u2019 \u2014 is deceptive and misleading to consumers who believe they are buying a product made in Hawaii,\u201d the lawsuit said. <\/p>\n

\u201cHad plaintiff and class members known the truth, they would not have bought the product or would have paid less for them,\u201d the suit said. <\/p>\n

The suit seeks to have the company change its label, as well as unspecified damages.<\/p>\n

King\u2019s Hawaiian did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
