\nThe Pitch:\u00a0<\/strong>Kaley Cuoco is a frequently drunk flight attendant who wakes up in a bed next to a dead man. She has no memory of the murder and has to race to piece together what happ<\/a>ened before she ends up taking the blame.<\/p>\n

Why It\u2019s Essential Quarantine Viewing:\u00a0<\/strong>Need a fun, addictive TV distraction as we kiss 2020 goodbye? Look no further than\u00a0The Flight Attendant<\/em>, the HBO Max series that just wrapped and is already getting a second season. I realize that since the first season has ended many of you probably binged through\u00a0The Flight Attendant<\/em> by now, or watched it while it aired. But if you\u2019ve yet to get around to checking it out, I\u2019m here to tell you it\u2019s worth your time.<\/p>\n

I was only vaguely familiar with\u00a0Kaley Cuoco<\/strong> before I watched The Flight Attendant<\/em> <\/strong>on HBO Max. I knew she was on\u00a0The Big Bang Theory<\/em>, but since that show is poison, I\u2019ve only seen clips here and there and have no plans to ever actually watch it. I also knew she voiced Harley Quinn on the excellent animated\u00a0Harley Quinn<\/em> series. But beyond that, she was mostly a mystery to me. So it was a pleasant surprise to watch\u00a0The Flight Attendant<\/em> and learn that Ms. Cuoco is actually a damn good performer, perfectly adept at carrying her own flashy series.<\/p>\n

In The Flight Attendant<\/em>, Cuoco is\u00a0Cassie Bowden, a flight attendant (duh) who is prone to getting blackout drunk. The series sets Cassie up as a hot mess but as the story unfolds we learn more about her traumatic background and how she became so dependant on alcohol. But first, she wakes up next to a dead man. Cassie meets handsome guy Alex (Michiel Huisman<\/strong>) on one of her flights and ends up going out on a date with him when they land in\u00a0Thailand. As is her usual custom, Cassie drinks too much \u2013 and blacks out. When she regains consciousness in Alex\u2019s hotel room the next day she\u2019s greeted with a shock \u2013 Alex is dead, his throat slit.
\nCassie is understandably nervous and confused, and, after being convinced she\u2019ll be blamed for the murder, she flees \u2013 hoping that by flying back to America she can leave this entire unpleasant experience behind her. But that\u2019s easier said than done, and soon law enforcement (and others) are zeroing in on her while Cassie starts trying to figure out what really happened to Alex.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of twists and turns along the way, and while some of them\u00a0really<\/em> force you to suspend your disbelief, it ultimately works, anchored by breezy pacing and Cucoco\u2019s solid performance. Not everything on the show succeeds \u2013 there\u2019s a subplot involving a character played by\u00a0Rosie Perez<\/strong> that feels entirely unnecessary, even though Perez\u2019s performance is memorable. But in the end, the show comes together nicely.<\/p>\n

The series clearly did well for HBO Max, since they already went ahead and ordered a second season. I\u2019m not\u00a0entirely<\/em> sure how I feel about that \u2013 the idea of Cassie stumbling into yet another crazy mystery seems just a little too far-fetched. And yet, the first season is so much fun that I\u2019m curious to see where it goes. And you will be, too, if you binge through season 1.<\/p>\n
