Minneapolis police officers carrying out a traffic stop on Wednesday night fatally shot a man suspected of a felony, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Officers exchanged gunfire with the unidentified man at a Holiday gas station at about 6:15 p.m. <\/p>\n

Witnesses said the man opened fire first, Minneapolis Police Department Chief Medaria Arradondo said at a press briefing, the Star Tribune<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

A woman inside the car was unharmed and no officers were hurt in the fatal shooting that occurred less than a mile from where George Floyd died after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes.<\/p>\n

Wednesday night\u2019s incident was the department\u2019s first police killing in the city since Floyd, whose May 25 death sparked months of nationwide protests against police brutality and racial inequality.<\/p>\n

Dozens of protesters descended to the scene of Wednesday\u2019s shooting, yelling at officers.<\/p>\n

Arradondo urged demonstrators to stay peaceful. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot allow for destructive criminal behavior, our city has gone through too much,\u201d the chief said at the press briefing, according to the Star Tribune.<\/p>\n

Police body camera footage will be released quickly, according to Arradondo, who said, \u201cI want the community to be able to see what occurred.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear how many officers were involved in the traffic stop.<\/p>\n

The state\u2019s Bureau of Criminal App<\/a>rehension is handling an investigation.<\/p>\n
