One million New York City residents will receive the coronavirus vaccine in the first month of 2021, Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a New Year\u2019s Eve pledge.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to vaccinate 1 million New Yorkers in January,\u201d the mayor told CNN.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an ambitious New Year\u2019s resolution. Thus far, about 80,000 city residents have gotten the first of two doses of the vaccine \u2014 health care workers, first responders and nursing home residents, those deemed most at risk from COVID-19 exposure.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore and more people want to get the vaccine and we\u2019re going to do that,\u201d said de Blasio, calling the campaign a \u201ccall to arms.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor said the city will expand the locations where residents can get jabbed with the vaccine \u2014 including mobile \u201cpop-up\u201d sites and schools.<\/p>\n

He said the city \u201chas the capacity\u201d to do 1 million vaccinations in January but it will need the federal government and manufacturers to ramp up distribution.<\/p>\n

De Blasio also said the city is working closely with Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state health officials, who set up the criteria on who gets offered the vaccine and when.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew York City can do this at a record pace,\u201d he said. \u201cGive us the vaccine, we\u2019ll make it happ<\/a>en.\u201d<\/p>\n

Complaints have mounted locally and nationally about the slow pace of vaccine administration, and who has been getting it.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the governor announced that recovering addicts in residential substance abuse treatment centers will get vaccinated.<\/p>\n

Congressional staffers also got the green light to get inoculated from COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the rollout of vaccine distribution to city police officers was delayed.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
