In the midst of all the tomfoolery and shenanigans taking place during\u00a0Wonder Woman 1984<\/em><\/strong>, I totally missed the fact that Gal Gadot<\/strong>\u2018s Wonder Woman never once uses her iconic shield or sword \u2013 two things she used in the first film. She uses her magical lasso\u00a0a lot<\/em>, but the shield\/sword combo never makes an app<\/a>earance. Like all things in movies<\/a>, this was a deliberate choice, and star Gal Gadot<\/strong> has revealed why the Patty Jenkins<\/strong>-directed sequel nixed Wonder Woman\u2019s weapons.<\/p>\n

As I watched\u00a0Wonder Woman 1984<\/em>, I kept thinking: \u201cWow, this isn\u2019t good.\u201d I\u00a0also<\/em> kept thinking: \u201cWow, Wonder Woman is using her lasso\u00a0a lot<\/em> in this movie. Much more than the first film.\u201d I was so distracted by the abundant lasso-usage that I completely missed that Gal Gadot\u2019s Diana Prince\/Wonder Woman never once uses her famous sword and shield \u2013 two things she used in the first film. The shield was particularly iconic in that first movie, with Wonder Woman using it in the fantastic No Man\u2019s Land scene.
\nSo what happened? Did Diana whip out the sword and shield in a deleted scene? Apparently not. While speaking with\u00a0CBR<\/a><\/em>, Wonder Woman herself, Gal Gadot, revealed that the lack of sword and shield was meant to signify that Wonder Woman doesn\u2019t want to be a fighter anymore \u2013 she wants to be a peacekeeper. \u201cThis is part of the reason to why we decided that she shouldn\u2019t have a\u00a0sword or a shield,\u201d Gadot said. \u201cDiana is not aggressive. She\u2019s not there to fight. She\u2019s a peacemaker. Also, she has the higher understanding that people are not bad, per se\u2026We\u2019re all the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

I actually think this element is a big reason why the movie doesn\u2019t work: it\u2019s very naive.\u00a0Wonder Woman 1984<\/em> operates under an optimistic assumption that deep down inside, people are genuinely good. And I\u2019m sorry but\u2026that\u2019s not true. At all. And while I appreciate the idea of an optimistic superhero movie, the optimism in\u00a0Wonder Woman 1984<\/em> is just a bit too much.<\/p>\n

In any case, Wonder Woman used her sword and shield in both\u00a0Batman v Superman<\/em> and\u00a0Justice League<\/em>, two films set after\u00a0Wonder Woman 1984<\/em>, so at some point, the character decides to take them back up again. Will we ever get an explanation of that, perhaps in\u00a0Wonder Woman 3<\/em>? Or will it simply remain unremarked upon? I\u2019m guessing it\u2019ll be the latter unless there\u2019s a scene in the upcoming Snyder Cut of\u00a0Justice League<\/em> where Diana talks about using her weapons again.<\/p>\n
