“#High school runner refuses to wear jersey with Robert E. Lee\u2019s name<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A star cross country runner said she will no longer wear a jersey bearing her high school\u2019s name \u2014 Robert E. Lee \u2014 and is pushing for a renaming of the 62-year-old campus, according to reports.<\/p>\n

Trude Lamb, 16, an incoming sophomore at the school who was adopted from Ghana back in 2014, wore the school\u2019s jersey, emblazoned with \u201cTyler Lee,\u201d throughout her freshman year \u2014 but has had enough, CNN reported.<\/p>\n

Tyler stands for the Tyler Independent School District, of which the school is a member, and Lee stands for the school\u2019s full name.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a shorter version of Robert E. Lee,\u201d she told the network. \u201cIt still reminds me of who he was.\u201d<\/p>\n

The school\u2019s alma mater song explicitly glorifies Lee, a Confederate general<\/a> who lived from 1807 to 1870 and owned slaves, Lamb said.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert E. Lee we raise our voice in praise of your name,\u201d it says. \u201cMay honor and glory e\u2019er guide you to fame.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat has he done for him to be praised like that?\u201d Lamb said.<\/p>\n

In a recent letter to the school board and obtained by CNN, Lamb wrote that she can\u2019t reconcile playing sports for a school named after Lee.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love and enjoy the sports I play at REL,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI can\u2019t be playing sports, supporting, and going to a school that was named after a person who was against my people right here in the United States. He owned slaves and didn\u2019t believe people like me were 100% human let alone ever go to my very high school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Community members pushed for the board to change the school\u2019s name back in 2018, but when no one seconded the motion at the school board meeting, things didn\u2019t go any further, according to local reports.<\/p>\n

Lamb\u2019s letter brought it to the forefront once again.<\/p>\n

A petition calling for the renaming garnered more than 10,000 signatures, CNN reported.<\/p>\n

Some have also called for another school in the district, John Tyler High School \u2014 named after the 10th US president who worked to create the Southern Confederacy \u2014 to be changed.<\/p>\n

Dozens of protesters gathered outside the district\u2019s administration office Monday, and guests were allowed to voice their opinions at a meeting held inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like that\u2019s a great way to try and bring awareness to it,\u201d 2019 graduate Brandon Collins told KETK. \u201cRobert E. Lee has a bunch of black athletes. We have a whole bunch of black people in theatre and band. It hurts as an African American to go to a school named after someone who fought to own our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lamb\u2019s adopted mother, Laura Owens, told the station her daughter has received some social media<\/a> backlash.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the comments have been \u2018I bet she\u2019s being put up to this. I bet she\u2019s being paid,\u2019 things like that,\u201d she said. \u201cA small percentage have been encouraging and affirming, especially some from her teachers from Robert E. Lee \u2014 they\u2019re amazing.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
