{"id":145305,"date":"2021-01-01T02:37:38","date_gmt":"2020-12-31T23:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/ny-courts-plan-to-clear-covid-induced-backlog-of-cases\/"},"modified":"2021-01-01T02:37:38","modified_gmt":"2020-12-31T23:37:38","slug":"ny-courts-plan-to-clear-covid-induced-backlog-of-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/ny-courts-plan-to-clear-covid-induced-backlog-of-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"#NY courts plan to clear COVID-induced backlog of cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NY courts plan to clear COVID-induced backlog of cases<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/12\/janet-diFiore.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The state\u2019s top judge wants to reduce a huge, pandemic-related backlog of criminal cases across the city \u2014 leading cops to fear that cut-rate justice will embolden criminals, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n<p>The unprecedented plan would bring to the Big <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le a concept known as the \u201crocket docket,\u201d in which felony cases get quickly resolved without first being presented to a grand jury for indictment.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Judge Janet DiFiore held a conference in mid-December with all five of the Big Apple\u2019s district attorneys to discuss the 16,000 indictments that are on hold because grand juries are not being convened due to the coronavirus crisis, a spokesman for the state court system said.<\/p>\n<p>The staggering number is twice the 8,000 cases that were pending at the same time last year.<\/p>\n<p>The group decided to have Bronx Criminal Court Supervising Judge George Grasso oversee the creation of special courts to \u201cfocus on resolving as many of these pending cases as possible but not in any particular way,\u201d spokesman Lucian Chalfen said.<\/p>\n<p>Plans call for two of the special courts \u2014 or \u201cparts\u201d \u2014 in each borough except Staten Island, which will have only one, Chalfen said<\/p>\n<p>As many as 1,000 cases in each borough will be docketed for court conferences beginning Jan. 11, Chalfen said.<\/p>\n<p>A former city judge told The Post that the inevitable outcome would be that defendants \u201care going to be getting sweetheart deals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, you cannot threaten that we\u2019re sending this out to trial,\u201d the ex-jurist said. \u201cThat\u2019s when people usually cave, but they can\u2019t threaten that anymore. They\u2019re going to have to give away the courthouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NYPD sources blasted the plan, with some worried that prosecutors will resort to offering no-jail plea bargains and conditional discharges \u2014 or just simply drop some cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they dismiss hundreds of these cases, we might as well do a remake of the movie \u2018Escape from New York,\u2019 \u201d one cop said.<\/p>\n<p>Another cop predicted that prosecutors \u201cwill probably throw out all those commercial burglaries during the early June riots in Manhattan that caused millions of dollars in damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat will prevent the people who did these crimes from doing them again?\u201d the cop said. \u201cThe streets will be full of criminals who should not only be in jail but who never even went to trial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople for the DA\u2019s offices didn\u2019t return requests for comment on Thursday.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
