Just a few hundred people \u2014 mainly first responders spaced apart by barricades \u2014 were given access to Times Square on New Year\u2019s Eve to bid farewell to 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mayor de Blasio and First lady Chirlane McCray were on hand at the low-key celebration to initiate the traditional ball drop at midnight.<\/p>\n

Leading up to the new year, a star-studded performance featuring Jennifer Lopez, Cyndi Lauper and others was televised for viewers at home.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The event normally attracts thousands of tourists, but this year the all-but empty affair drew the attention of several Twitter<\/a> users.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so surreal to watch New Year\u2019s Rockin Eve and see Times Square empty,\u201d one user<\/a> wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another person on Twitter poked fun at the \u201csad\u201d set-up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NYE celebration in Times Square was sad af. People in cow pens wearing Planet Fitness hats and they dropped the ball late after the slowest rendition you\u2019ve ever heard of Imagine, and DeBlasio dancing super awkward. Yikes NYC,\u201d he tweeted<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A third user was similarly unimpressed over the showing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis must be the most pathetic New Years celebration ever witnessed at Times Square. How depressing!\u201d the person<\/a> wrote.\u00a0\n <\/div>\n
