While peppering a film with explanatory dialogue isn\u2019t inherently a bad thing, you do run into problems when it pulls audiences out of a story. <\/p>\n<p>Which brings us to<strong> Christopher Nolan<\/strong>\u2018s <em><strong>Tenet<\/strong>. <\/em>To put it as simply as possible, Nolan\u2019s latest puzzle box is about preventing World War III with time <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>. And, conservatively, every second line of dialogue in <em>Tenet<\/em> is exposition. <\/p>\n<p>Now, Nolan is no stranger to challenging narrative frameworks. And when you\u2019re wheeling and dealing in complex (and even incomprehensible) concepts, giving your audience opportunities to intuit things visually and emotionally can go a long way. The most compelling thing about <span style=\"background-color: rgba(30, 30, 30, 0.2);\"><strong><i>Interste<\/i><\/strong><\/span><em><strong>llar<\/strong>\u2018<\/em>s tesseract scene is not the expository dialogue breaking down how it works and why it exists. In fact, when that disruptive voice comes through on Cooper\u2019s radio, insisting on explaining what\u2019s going on, it actually cheapens the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan clearly<em> <\/em>cares about the power of showing rather than telling. He isn\u2019t flipping semi-trucks through the streets of Chicago to save money. But in spite of his attention to the visual elements of filmmaking, Nolan has also (paradoxically) developed a reliance on exposition that, with <em>Tenet,<\/em> is starting to prove disastrous. It\u2019s one thing to enjoy a film you don\u2019t fully understand.
