A ransomware attack has crippled the city\u2019s teacher discipline system, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n

A contractor that provides hearing transcript<\/a>s for the city Department of Education, the Ubiqus Group, said it \u201cwas hit by a\u00a0 ransomware-type cybersecurity incident\u201d on Dec. 4.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cAs a precautionary measure, we have shut down all our IT systems across all our operating sites,\u201d the company announced on its website.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a ransomware attack, hackers seize a user\u2019s data, folders or device until a \u201cransom\u201d fee is paid. A DOE spokeswoman would not say whether a ransom had been demanded.<\/p>\n

Pending a probe, the cyberattack shut down NYC termination hearings for tenured\u00a0 educators accused of incompetence or misconduct.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThis is serious. Transcripts are the lifeblood of these hearings,\u201d said Betsy Combier, a paralegal who defends teachers and a blogger who first reported<\/a> the malware attack. \u201cYou can\u2019t\u00a0do anything without the transcripts, you can\u2019t do a closing. You can\u2019t decide a case.\u201d<\/p>\n

Combier said she called the state Education Department and was told that a \u201cforensic cyberteam\u201d is investigating.<\/p>\n

The city DOE said Ubiqus is contracted by the state. A spokeswoman could not immedia<\/a>tely say how many hearings have been held up.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
