UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Sunday that COVID-19 lockdown measures there are \u201cprobably going to get tougher\u201d since the country needs to be \u201crealistic\u201d about the alarming spread of a new, more contagious strain of coronavirus.<\/p>\n

Johnson said that there are \u201cobviously a range of tougher measures that we would have to consider\u201d as each region remains under a different tier of lockdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we are doing now is using the tiering system, which is a very tough system\u2026 and, alas, probably about to get tougher to keep things under control,\u201d Johnson told the BBC\u2019s \u201cThe Andrew Marr Show.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Most of the country is currently at the highest Tier 4 level, which requires the closure of nonessential stores and places like gyms and recreation centers.<\/p>\n

Johnson said he wouldn\u2019t \u201cspeculate\u201d about what new rules might be enforced to stop the spread of the virus, but suggested that curfews and closing schools are on the table for areas with worsening outbreaks.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not something we necessarily want to do,\u201d Johnson said of the potential school closures.<\/p>\n

But Johnson said there\u2019s likely to be a \u201ctough period ahead\u201d as a new strain of the virus continues to spread rapidly throughout the nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to be realistic about the pace of which the new variant is spreading,\u201d Johnson told the news<\/a> show.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to be realistic about the impact it\u2019s having on the [United Kingdom National Health Service]. And we\u2019ve got to be humbled in the face of this virus.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
