\n Eye on the Left: Bernie Sanders Loses Again<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThree months ago, Bernie Sanders lost his chance at the Democratic nomination\u201d \u2014 and now, The New York Times\u2019 Ross Douthat observes, \u201che may be losing the battle for the future of the left.\u201d For decades, Sanders has called for Democrats to return to the \u201cold-guard leftism\u201d of \u201cclass struggle, the rectification of economic inequality, the war against the \u2018millionaires and billionaires,\u2019\u200a\u201d rather than fight \u201ccultural battles.\u201d Yet the \u201ccurrent revolutionary moment\u201d centers on \u201cracial justice and defunding the police.\u201d That, Douthat argues, vindicates Sanders: Purging monuments and statues, after all, \u201cisn\u2019t as threatening to power\u201d as Sanders\u2019 proposed economic revolution, as corporations\u2019 rush to pay \u201cfealty to anti-racism\u201d shows. This \u201crevolution\u2019s conspicuous elite support,\u201d in other words, \u201cseems like strong evidence that Bernie Sanders failed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Down With Mob Rule<\/strong><\/p>\n

The mob is winning, rues Charles Lipson at RealClearPolitics, with the \u201cmost frenzied voices\u201d dominating the public square and \u201csilencing dissent.\u201d It began in the universities, where \u201cthe idea of an open forum, so basic to democracies, already lies a-moldering.\u201d But now the same mob-like aggression against conservative views has migrated to the national mainstream, with the help of mainstream-media outlets and Big Tech. Most ominously, the repression is now backed by the \u201cthreat of violence,\u201d which \u201cheightens the danger of voicing any disagreement. Large-scale violence, whatever its source, whatever its purpose, undermines social<\/a> stability and assails democratic procedures.\u201d No wonder the same mob is loudly calling for defunding the police.<\/p>\n

Culture watch: An Irrational Revolution<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how to argue in America anymore, or whether it\u2019s even worth it,\u201d laments Tablet\u2019s Jacob Siegel. Argument \u201crequires that certain fundamental questions are settled and beyond dispute\u201d: To argue \u201cwhether the sky is blue, we\u2019ll have to agree on what the sky is.\u201d But the \u201cnew argumentation\u201d has \u201cvastly expanded the number of subjects .\u2009.\u2009. beyond argumentation\u201d and even \u201creversed the nature of the matters that cannot be questioned.\u201d It\u2019s \u201cprecisely the most contentious issues \u2014 is biological sex a valid concept? are racism and abuse so widespread in American law enforcement that we should immediately defund the police? \u2014 that must be accepted a priori.\u201d Insisting that such conclusions be accepted \u201cbefore the argument begins is not the move of\u201d anyone confident \u201cin their truth.\u201d In fact, the move exploits \u201cthe discourse of rational argumentation\u201d to \u201cissue moral commandments.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: \u2018Moral History\u2019 vs. History<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s recent claim that \u201cLatinos are black\u201d because of undefined \u201csystems of power\u201d is \u201cahistorical, unscientific, pseudo-intellectual gibberish,\u201d snaps National Review\u2019s David Harsanyi. Then again, AOC recently \u201cgrumbled that Americans were too concerned with being \u2018factually correct\u2019 and not enough about being \u2018morally right.\u2019\u200a\u201d Her belief that \u201cone undermines the other\u201d is \u201crevealing\u201d: For progressives, \u201cthe hue of a person\u2019s skin\u201d predetermines status as victim or \u00adoppressor. Yet history \u2014 \u201cinconvenient and messy for all involved\u201d \u2014 \u00adbelies this belief. Some Latinos have African roots; some don\u2019t. \u201cSome Latinos were oppressed. Some Latinos were the oppressors.\u201d Yet progressives simply claim that actual truth misses \u201cthe moral truth.\u201d This goes beyond \u201cmuddying moral and objective truths\u201d to \u201csimply replacing them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Media watch: CNN Gets Hoaxed \u2014 Again<\/strong><\/p>\n

When the story broke this week, \u201cevery reasonable person\u201d wondered if the app<\/a>arent noose in black NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace\u2019s garage was \u201cjust another hoax like the Jussie Smollet situation,\u201d quips The Federalist\u2019s David Marcus. But CNN ran with the story as proving \u201cjust how racist the United States still is.\u201d Now the FBI has confirmed that there never was a noose in the garage. So \u201chow could CNN run with this story so \u00adaggressively\u201d when it had \u201cevery reason in the world to question it?\u201d Probably, the network \u201cknew the story might fall apart and ran with [it] anyway\u201d \u2014 all because it \u201cfit the CNN narrative.\u201d Another question: Will CNN \u201cspend equal time\u201d informing viewers that it \u201cgot the story utterly and completely wrong\u201d? Hah!<\/p>\n
