An 18-year-old kayaker who went missing on Long Island was found dead hours later, officials said Sunday.<\/p>\n

Raistlin Ruther, of Riverhead, took his blue kayak out in Jamesport, NY., at around 8 a.m. on Saturday and never returned, the US Coast Guard said.<\/p>\n

He was reported missing about 4:50 p.m. Saturday. Rescuers scoured nearby waters for several hours until coming across the capsized kayak.<\/p>\n

A Southold Police Department marine unit then found Ruther\u2019s body around a mile west of Shinnecock Canal just before 9 p.m., the Coast Guard said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo lose someone like him is so difficult to accept,\u201d his aunt, Carissa Sexton, wrote on a GoFundMe page<\/a> Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was your gentle giant, an old man\u2019s soul,\u201d Sexton continued. \u201cI always told him how much I admired his maturity, independence, and adventurous spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Raistlin left us, a little piece of us all left with him.\u201d <\/p>\n

The teenager\u2019s mom, Laura Gandara, of Murrieta, California, remembered him as an avid outdoorsman and experienced kayaker in an interview with Newsday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ruther \u201cwas such a well-mannered, polite boy,\u201d his mom said, adding: \u201cHe was not your average 18-year-old.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just loved to be so healthy. He had absolutely no interest in trying any drugs \u2014 not smoking anything, not drinking anything,\u201d Gandara said. \u201cI just felt like I never had to worry about him.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI never did think that something terrible would happ<\/a>en to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Capt. Eva Van Camp, commander of Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, said that authorities who searched the waters for Ruther had \u201ctruly hoped for a different outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe offer our deepest sympathies to Raistlin\u2019s family and friends during this unimaginable time,\u201d Van Camp said in a statement.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
