It\u2019s the Thrift-Penny Opera.<\/p>\n

The Metropolitan Opera is using the pandemic as an excuse to furlough its top musicians \u2014 and then fill their spots in the pit with cheap non-union talent, critics say.<\/p>\n

The famed establishment\u2019s alleged miserly antics included using budget musicians for the Met\u2019s pay-per-view New Year\u2019s Eve gala<\/a> \u2014 without any mention of the symphonic skimping included in the literature supplied to its donors and ticket-holders.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is artistic malpractice and unacceptable that non-Met musicians are being hired to perform under the banner of the Metropolitan Opera,\u201d Adam Krauthamer, president of the musicians union AFM Local 802, wrote in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s be clear: hiring non-Met\u00a0musicians under the banner of the Metropolitan Opera and outsourcing the orchestra\u2019s work is an attack on the Met as an artistic institution and an insult to the very artists who work there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra Committee, a group of workers, said management is using the pandemic to make opportunistic long-term cuts at their expense.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have now been unpaid for 10 months and counting,\u201d the group said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThe Metropolitan Opera is an outlier in our industry; every other major orchestra has been compensated since the very beginning of the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joel Noyes, assistant principal cello of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, told The Post on Sunday that there has not been any constructive dialogue between his group and management on the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I came to the Met, it was the most attractive job in the country,\u201d Noyes said. \u201cFor the last 14 years, we have lost ground to our peers in our industry. With every concession the musicians take, the less world-class talent we are able to attract and retain.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tone, color and flexibility of our orchestra cannot be matched by ad-hoc pick-up groups,\u201d the cellist said.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0September press release,<\/a> Met General<\/a> Manager Peter Gelb said he had faith that the members of the company and public would understand the opera company\u2019s belt-tightening because of the circumstances of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe inability to perform is taking a tremendous toll on our company,\u201d Gelb said at the time. \u201cOur future relies on making strong\u00a0 artistic strides, while collectively reducing our costs until the audience has fully returned.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nearly 3,000 people have reacted to the disgruntled union\u2019s post on Instagram<\/a>, with some who claim to be donors expressing their dismay.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a Met donor and will not give one penny more until the musicians are treated equitably. Shame on Gelb and everyone else involved,\u201d one comment reads.<\/p>\n

Another writer said, \u201cWhat the hell is wrong with the Met Board? Do they not know if it weren\u2019t for the musicians, their top billed opera stars wouldn\u2019t have any music to sing to? Get it together. This is a first class orchestra WITHOUT the opera. They deserve to be treated as such.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those grievances were echoed by Noyes, who said, \u201cOur fear is that the voice of the Met Orchestra will be lost not only for the virtual performances but that, because of mismanagement, we will also see a permanent and lasting loss of artistic quality.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Metropolitan Opera did not respond to a Post request for comment.<\/p>\n

This controversy comes after a December proposal to slash the long-term contracts of stagehands by 30 percent was rejected by Local One, the union representing the employees. <\/p>\n

\u201cMet management has locked out the stagehands and has claimed publicly that they will find non-union shops to build sets if no [contract] resolution happ<\/a>ens,\u201d Noyes said. \u201cI worry that we could be next.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
