Chlo\u00e9 Zhao<\/strong>, director of quiet, introspective films like\u00a0The Rider<\/em> and\u00a0Nomadland<\/em>, is\u00a0also<\/em>\u00a0the filmmaker behind the big, expensive Marvel superhero movie\u00a0<\/strong>Eternals<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0<\/em>a move that\u2019s bound to give some people whiplash. But if you were worried that Zhao was just some hired gun on the upcoming MCU movie, Zhao is ready to set the record straight and confirm that she played a big part in the\u00a0Eternals<\/em> screenplay, too.<\/p>\n

At the moment, all material related to\u00a0Eternals<\/em> lists\u00a0Kaz Firpo<\/strong> and Ryan Firpo<\/strong> as the screenwriters. But there\u2019s another writer who played a major part in the script<\/a>: director\u00a0Chlo\u00e9 Zhao. In a video interview with\u00a0Margaret Gardiner<\/a> (via The Playlist<\/a>), Zhao said: \u201cI am the writer on Eternals<\/em>, the credits just aren\u2019t updated yet. I don\u2019t know what it would be like if I didn\u2019t write the film, if I wasn\u2019t at least a huge part of the writing process. So yeah I haven\u2019t experienced that in my career, I\u2019m scared of that if that happens one day.\u201d
\nEternals<\/em>\u00a0\u201cfeatures an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame<\/a>, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind\u2019s most ancient enemy, The Deviants.\u201d The cast includes\u00a0Angelina Jolie<\/strong>, Richard Madden<\/strong>, Kumail Nanjiani<\/strong>, Lauren Ridloff<\/strong>, Brian Tyree Henry<\/strong>, Salma Hayek<\/strong>, Lia McHugh<\/strong>, Don Lee<\/strong>, Kit Harington<\/strong>, Gemma Chan<\/strong>, and Barry Keoghan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And while there might be a knee-jerk reaction from some cinephiles about Zhao stepping away from great indie films to make something part of the bloated Marvel Cinematic Universe, Zhao is all-in on the idea, and has nothing but high praise for the Marvel machine:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the writing process, that\u2019s sort of where I bring my sensibility in, that\u2019s a huge part of it. And creating situations that will allow certain kinds of cinematic language to come in, that is something that I\u2019ve learned from my last three films. I think what Marvel has been so incredible at \u2013\u00a0Kevin\u00a0[Feige] and\u00a0Nate\u00a0[Moore] and the whole team \u2013 they knew from the moment I pitched the film, I really wanted the scope and scale at the same time as the intimacy. They knew I wanted both. They have been so incredible holding my hand through the entire process of allowing me to go as far as possible and as small as possible, and how that fits into the whole MCU. It\u2019s been a pretty incredible process. You\u2019ll have to wait and see.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Eternals<\/em> is set to open on\u00a0November 5, 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
