“#The Paul Greengrass Watchmen Movie Might’ve Been Like Joker \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Once upon a time, before Zack Snyder\u2019s movie and the excellent HBO series<\/a>, we almost got Paul Greengrass<\/strong>\u2018\u00a0Watchmen<\/em><\/strong>. Greengrass was actually one of several filmmakers to circle the project, including Terry Gilliam,\u00a0Darren Aronofsky, and even Tim Burton. Those are some\u00a0very<\/em> different filmmakers, and it\u2019s easy to picture the wild ways Gilliam, Aronofksy, or Burton would interpret the material. But what about Greengrass? How would\u00a0his<\/em> version of\u00a0Watchmen<\/em> play out? According to the director himself, his\u00a0Watchmen<\/em> wouldn\u2019t have been as faithful to the source material as Snyder\u2019s movie. And it also might\u2019ve ended up being similar to Todd Phillips\u2019\u00a0Joker<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Greengrass\u2019 comments on his unmade\u00a0Watchmen<\/em> come from the\u00a0Happy Sad Confused<\/a> podcast, where the filmmaker opened up about the film that never was. While Greengrass stresses that he \u201cdidn\u2019t articulate [his vision for Watchmen<\/em>]\u00a0clearly because the movie never got made,\u201d he adds: \u201cMy view was, I didn\u2019t want to do a faithful adaptation, and that might have been a disastrous endeavor and perhaps why I didn\u2019t get the movie made.\u201d
\nZack Snyder\u2019s 2009 film adaptation was famous (or perhaps infamous is a better term) for being\u00a0extremely\u00a0<\/em>rigid when it came to the source material. Snyder essentially used the graphic novel as a series of storyboards and recreated entire panels for the screen. But that\u2019s obviously not what Greengrass would\u2019ve done, based on his comments.<\/p>\n

Greengrass went on to compare his vague ideas for the film to\u00a0Joker<\/em>, the Oscar-winning Todd Phillips movie where Joaquin Phoenix smokes cigarettes and dances down some steps.\u00a0Watchmen<\/em> is a notoriously \u201cadult\u201d comic, full of all sorts of un-family friendly stuff, so it makes sense that Greengrass would look at the dark and gritty\u00a0Joker<\/em> and see some comparison.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to believe these characters lived in the real world and that a lot of what they were thinking and doing was delusional,\u201d the director said. \u201cThere was something in Joker<\/em> that had [a similar] quality to it. Joker\u00a0<\/em>was in a real-world [setting], and he was filled with delusions, and [so the story idea was] superheroes\u2019 identities were within people\u2019s minds and were interior delusions as opposed to actualities. And the [movie] idea would have been where [the two ideas] join, if that makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t exactly say I\u2019m curious to see what Greengrass would\u2019ve done with the material, primarily because I think\u00a0Watchmen<\/em> works best on the page. The best way to app<\/a>roach it, in my humble opinion, was the path the HBO series took \u2013 using the comic as a starting point and then trying something completely new from there, although I suppose Greengrass wanting to not remain so beholden to the source material might\u2019ve made for something interesting. In the end, we\u2019ll never know.<\/p>\n
