Anti-lockdowners and dour mask fanatics alike \u201cfeel surrounded by murderers and denialists,\u201d who \u201care either intentionally trying to make things worse or just too blinkered to admit there\u2019s a problem in the first place.\u201d The result of these competing attitudes is to turn the virus into a sort of \u201cmorality play\u201d: Every event in the course of the pandemic, not least individual cases, must be tallied as the fault of one party or the other. The more human and humane response is \u201cto extend condition-free sympathy and kindness\u201d to our fellow citizens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From the left: 2020\u2019s Worst <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>room Wokery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/taibbi.substack.com\/p\/the-wokest-news-stories-of-2020-59a\">At his TK News blog, Matt Taibbi flags<\/a> some of last year\u2019s most absurd \u201cwoke\u201d stories \u2014 signs of \u201can accelerating newsroom mania for political groupthink that was equal parts frightening and ridiculous.\u201d One piece whined that wine-loving is racist, since its \u201cvocabulary . . . is nearly exclusively rooted in flavors and aromas common to Western Europe\u201d; another described the perils posed by actor Laurence Fox\u2019s declaration that he \u201cdoes not date woke women.\u201d A Time article assailed the white privilege of Helen Keller; a Vox critic \u201cdenounced white vegans who tout \u2018recipes . . . that rely on racial stereotypes,\u2019 like \u201cAfrican peanut stew.\u2019\u200a\u201d An ABC.com writer \u201crailed against the \u2018systemic racism\u2019 of America\u2019s \u2018Great White Outdoors\u2019\u200a\u201d \u2014 the national park system. The worst of the worst: a Guardian column ignoring the fact that tall buildings simply seek \u201cto fit more people in crammed real estate,\u201d entitled \u201c\u200a\u2018Upward-Thrusting Buildings Ejaculating Into the Sky\u2019 \u2014 Do Cities Have To Be So Sexist?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Campus watch: War on Free Speech Isn\u2019t Over<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>College-speaker \u201cdisinvitations\u201d may have declined since 2016, but only because invitations to conservatives are now being blocked from the start, reports Princeton sophomore Adam Hoffman \u2014 whose attempts to have Pulitzer Prize-winner George Will and federal <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eals judge Neomi Rao address his campus were nixed,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2021\/01\/the-new-strategy-to-suppress-conservative-voices-on-campus\/\"> he writes at National Review<\/a>, even as \u201cextreme progressives\u201d were OK\u2019d. \u201cA disproportionate share of university events and commencement speakers around the country are progressive\u201d \u2014 and that \u201cbelies the purpose of universities\u201d as \u201ctruth-seeking institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rocker: Why AI Will Never Write a Great Song<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spectator.us\/nick-cave-ai-great-song-red-hand-files\/\">At The Spectator, rocker Nick Cave lays down<\/a> reasons why no artificial intelligence \u201cwill be able to write better songs than humans can.\u201d The key issue: \u201cWhat a great song makes us feel is a sense of awe,\u201d something rooted in \u201cour audacity as humans to reach beyond our potential.\u201d In truly great songs, \u201cwe are listening to Beethoven compose the Ninth Symphony while almost totally deaf. We are listening to Prince, that tiny cluster of purple atoms, singing in the pouring rain at the Super Bowl and blowing everyone\u2019s minds. We are listening to Nina Simone stuff all her rage and disappointment into the most tender of love songs.\u201d In short, \u201cwhat we are actually listening to is human limitation and the audacity to transcend it. Artificial intelligence, for all its unlimited potential, simply doesn\u2019t have this capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Religion beat: The Wisdom of Kosher Slaughter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last month, the European Court of Justice upheld Belgium\u2019s ban on Jewish and Muslim ritual slaughter. The decision, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2021\/01\/kosher-slaughter-and-the-dignity-of-all-creatures\">charges Rafi Eis at First Things<\/a>, misunderstands how Jewish law has done a great deal \u201cto prevent animal cruelty.\u201d The Mosaic law, after all, prohibited eating limbs severed while the animal is still alive or any flesh while the animal still has \u201clife-blood in it\u201d (Genesis 9:4).
