Craig Ferguson returns to broadcast television with ABC\u2019s \u201cThe Hustler,\u201d a trivia game show in which one of five contestants is a ringer trying to fool his\/her competitors in a murder-mystery-type setting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know who [\u2018The Hustler\u2019] is and that\u2019s one of the thing I love about the show,\u201d says Ferguson, 58, back on network TV for the first time since leaving CBS\u2019 \u201cThe Late Late Show\u201d in 2015. \u201cI\u2019m playing along with everyone else at the same time \u2014 and I never once got it right.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to know who \u2018The Hustler\u2019 was was because then I wasn\u2019t faking anything,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s much more engaging and fun to do it like that. And there was an added bonus: when you\u2019re doing a game show, standards-and-practices are all over you making sure you don\u2019t show any bias.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each episode finds Ferguson, wearing a smoking jacket and bantering with the contestants on a set that resembles a drawing room\/library. The five participants size each other up while answering 10 trivia questions; \u201cThe Hustler\u201d already knows the answers \u2014 the questions are geared toward their life experiences \u2014 and secretly eliminates two contestants each week for a final faceoff that could net him\/her a $100,000 payoff.<\/p>\n

(The series premiered Monday night and moves to its regular 10 p.m. timeslot on Thursday.)<\/p>\n

The genre is not new to Ferguson, who hosted the syndicated game show \u201cCelebrity Name Game\u201d from 2014-2017 and also hosted History\u2019s \u201cJoin or Die with Craig Ferguson\u201d for one season in 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not quite a game show but it\u2019s kind of a reality show where you get to know the personalities of the contestants,\u201d he says of \u201cThe Hustler.\u201d \u201cWho\u2019s doing what, why is he being such a jerk \u2026 and the other part of the mix is\u2026sort of a \u2018Knives Out\u2019\/\u2019Clue\u2019 vibe that\u2019s going on. It\u2019s a hybrid of all those things which helps create the murder-mystery atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ferguson says the format of \u201cThe Hustler\u201d spurred his return to network television.<\/p>\n

\u201cI liked the idea and wanted to do some TV, but I wanted something that existed within its own world,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I last did standup, in 2019, I made a rule for myself, a stylistic choice of not doing politics at all\u2026and I kind of liked the idea of that it was topical to its own world. Things matter, but they matter within the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is family television,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can watch it with an angry teen, a hyperactive tween, an angry grandma or a depressed middle-aged person. It\u2019s entertainment for its own sake, and it\u2019s getting harder and harder to do that. That\u2019s why I loved the challenge and what drew me in. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt didn\u2019t matter of it was network TV or streaming or anything else \u2014 it\u2019s more about the [hosting] job itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, Ferguson says, \u201cThe Hustler\u201d (shot pre-COVID) morphed into a different kind of show than was initially envisioned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we made the pilot it was much more like a big, shiny game show. There wasn\u2019t the murder-mystery vibe,\u201d he says. \u201cWe added that afterward and accentuated it with the idea of putting it in a haunted-house environment which helped put an imaginative slant on the game, rather than it just being a cookie-cutter game show.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the series goes on, you\u2019ll see contestants who start making judgments based on age, gender or race \u2014 and suddenly that all goes out the window because it\u2019s wrong\u2026and messes with their internal profiling.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
