A recently app<\/a>ointed top staffer to Queens Borough President Donovan Richards suddenly withdrew from the position Monday \u2014 reportedly after facing scrutiny over old tweets critical of Israeli policies and lobbying efforts.<\/p>\n

Michael\u00a0Hurwitz was named as a deputy borough president on Sunday night and had been set to start in the role next month. <\/p>\n

However, on Monday night, Richards said in a statement that \u201cfor professional and personal reasons\u201d Hurwitz wouldn\u2019t be moving forward in the post as originally announced.<\/p>\n

The statement came hours after some of Hurwitz\u2019s tweets resurfaced earlier on Monday \u2014 and were criticized by some members of the borough\u2019s large Orthodox Jewish community, according to the Queens Daily Eagle<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Amid the controversy, Hurwitz told the Eagle that he and Richards\u00a0\u201cagreed that now is not the best time personally and professionally for me to join as was announced.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tweets shared on Monday included one from 2019 defending Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar\u2019s contentious comments on the pro-Israel lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). <\/p>\n

\u201c#IlanOmar (sic) speaks the truth, that AIPAC $$ influences votes in [Congress],\u201d the tweet read.<\/p>\n

Another missive called right-wing Israeli politician Naftali Bennett a \u201ccancer to Judaism\u201d and said he wasn\u2019t welcome in the US in the wake of the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue mass shooting.<\/p>\n

Hurwitz\u2019s account had been set to private by Monday night, but the Eagle posted screenshots of the tweets.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the Queens paper, Hurwitz \u2014 an attorney and social<\/a> worker who works at the non-profit GrowNYC \u2014 said he was a \u201cproud Jew\u201d and a \u201clifelong Zionist\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love the state of Israel and I love that I\u2019m raising my children Jewish in Queens,\u201d he said, adding that he spent part of high school and college in Israel and once trained with the country\u2019s military.<\/p>\n

Still, Hurwitz said that Twitter wasn\u2019t the best place to discuss Israel-US relations or the Israel-Palestine conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is one of the most complex issues out there,\u201d he told the Eagle. \u201cTo try to put it into 250 characters or less was na\u00efve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hurwitz didn\u2019t immediately return a message from The Post on Monday night.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
