Just minutes after New Year\u2019s, a stray bullet struck a 33-year-old Brooklyn woman in her bed \u2014 showing all too clearly that while 2020 has finally ended, violence is still surging across the city.<\/p>\n

That first victim of the year was taken to the hospital in stable condition. A 20-year-old Queens man wasn\u2019t so lucky: He was killed about an hour later.<\/p>\n

The madness grew Saturday when a 37-year-old woman in Queens was fatally shot. Hours later, a crazed man went on a wild, violent crime spree, striking several innocent victims in the head with a makeshift club, beating and threatening drivers, stealing two cars \u2014 and crashing both. <\/p>\n

All this followed just days after dozens of teens on bicycles terrorized motorists and damaged their vehicles in two separate attacks. <\/p>\n

Unchecked thuggery and untreated mental illness continue to fuel a frightening climate on city streets, after a year when murders rose more than 40 percent and more people were struck by gunfire than in the prior two years combined.<\/p>\n

Even electing a new mayor in November may not stop it: As The Post noted Sunday, the leading candidates have said next to nothing about how they\u2019d restore order. City Comptroller Scott Stringer has even pushed for further defunding of the NYPD.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, cops arrested a suspect in only 32 percent of last year\u2019s shootings, and even among those nabbed, more than half are back roaming the streets. Plus, to trim a backlog of indictments, the courts are now eyeing \u201crocket dockets\u201d \u2014 i.e., conferences instead of trials that insiders fear will result in dropped cases.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they dismiss hundreds of these cases,\u201d said one cop, \u201cwe might as well do a remake of the movie \u2018Escape from New York.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2020 pandemic might be curable with a vaccine, but the out-of-control violence won\u2019t be reined in unless New Yorkers themselves demand leaders who make it their top priority.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
