Ohio State coach Ryan Day said he expects Justin Fields to play in the College Football Playoff national championship game<\/a> against Alabama after the quarterback was banged up during the semifinals.<\/p>\n

Day declined to detail Fields\u2019 injury on Monday during a Zoom news<\/a> conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t get into specifics on injuries,\u201d Day said. \u201cWe give our availability report at the end of the week, and that\u2019s always been our policy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Day did say that Fields told the coach \u201che felt better waking up in the morning than he expected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ohio State and Alabama play for the title on Jan. 11 in South Florida.<\/p>\n

Fields took a hard hit to the right side of his torso from Clemson linebacker James Skalski in the second quarter of the Sugar Bowl on Saturday. Skalski was ejected for targeting because he led with the crown of his helmet.<\/p>\n

Fields missed only one play and finished with six touchdown passes in Ohio State\u2019s 49-28 victory. Fields later said \u201cmy whole right torso\u201d was \u201cmessed up,\u201d that he was in pain after every throw following the hit and he had received a shot from the medical staff to deal with the pain.<\/p>\n

Fields was scheduled to be part of Monday\u2019s news conference that included the head coaches of each playoff team and the offensive and defensive MVPs of the two semifinals.<\/p>\n

Buckeyes running back Trey Sermon took Fields\u2019 place on the call.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
